Happy Endings star Casey Wilson explains why a revival hasn’t happened yet. Premiering on ABC in 2011, the sitcom begins with the wedding of Dave (Zachary Knighton) and Alex (Elisha Cuthbert) coming to an unexpected halt when Alex leaves Dave at the altar. This leaves their group of friends to contend with the fundamental shift in their dynamic. Along with Wilson, Knighton, and Cuthbert, Happy Endings also starred Adam Pally, Eliza Coupe, and Damon Wayans Jr.

The series debuted to an initially mixed reaction. But, over time, Happy Endings saw its fortunes change and it drew favorable comparisons to seminal comedies such as FriendsCommunity, and Arrested Development. The decision by ABC to cancel Happy Endings in 2013, after three seasons, was met with widespread disapproval by fans and critics. The cancellation is still cited as one of the worst recent decisions made by network television and, since then, there has been a steady stream of discussion about the possibility of the show returning in some form. Wilson, who played the character of Penny, offered an update in a recent interview.

Speaking with PEOPLE to promote her role in the Apple TV+ series The Shrink Next Door, Wilson noted that there have been attempts to revive Happy Endings. But, she said, the cast and series creator David Caspe are all involved with different projects. Still, Wilson says that if the opportunity presented itself, she would love to do it. Wilson’s quote is included below.

“I’m happy to report they’ve tried to bring it back. It just kind of hasn’t worked out to everyone’s utter devastation. I think there’s hope for it, yes. … I would love to do it.”

Wilson, who goes on to say that she has an idea for a revival that is inspired by The White Lotus, is only the latest Happy Endings alum to comment on the show’s future. Pally, who portrayed Max, told Screen Rant in October that it was an issue of scheduling. He also cast doubt on the idea that there was a big audience waiting to revisit the short-lived sitcom. “I don’t know if that audience is as big as people think it is,” Pally said. The actor does thank the passionate fans who have pushed, ever since ABC’s cancellation, for the show to make a comeback.

Over the years, there have been attempts by other networks to pick up the series.  There have also been reunions, episode readings, online hoaxes in which it was claimed that the sitcom was being resurrected. And, in 2014, when Wilson starred in the NBC comedy Marry Me, along with other Happy Endings cast members, there were suggestions that the two shows existed in the same universe. Hopefully, as Pally and now Wilson have now suggested, the actors and creative team will be able to find the right time to work on new episodes.
