The potential crossover between Happy Death Day and Freaky has been addressed by the producer of both films. Happy Death Day, which is a cross between the time loop concept of Groundhog Day and a classic college campus slasher film, debuted in theaters in 2017 and was quickly followed by the 2019 sequel Happy Death Day 2U. Director Christopher Landon, who helmed both projects, later went on to make 2020's Freaky Friday slasher hybrid Freaky, leading fans to demand a Freaky Death Day crossover, an idea that has been given the thumbs up by several people behind the production of both films.
Recently, The Hollywood Reporter sat down with Blumhouse founder Jason Blum and director/producer James Wan to discuss their latest collaboration, the upcoming killer doll flick M3GAN. However, the conversation eventually turned to the Freaky Death Day crossover and whether it will really come to fruition. Blum offered a rather negative view on the future of the project, saying, "I wouldn’t have very high hopes," though he made certain not to rule out the possibility entirely. Freaky Death Day. I hate to say it, but your dreams of Freaky Death Day are a little further removed than they were even a few months ago. So I wouldn’t have very high hopes, but I would also say that anything is possible.
Why Freaky Death Day Might Not Be Moving Forward
Blum's comments that the Freaky Death Day crossover was more likely to happen several months ago is intriguing. It is unclear what may have transpired during that time that would make the film's prospects dwindle, beyond the plain fact that audience interest could diminish the more time that passes. While the details of that particular statement may never be known, one reason that the Happy Death Day and Freaky crossover might not be a go is readily apparent: the cast and crew of both franchises are incredibly busy.
Landon, who wrote two of the three films in addition to directing, is likely currently occupied with his upcoming Netflix film We Have a Ghost, which will star Stranger Things' David Harbour as a man who discovers that his new home is haunted and quickly goes viral. Freaky co-screenwriter Michael Kennedy also has his slate occupied by Time Cut, a new upcoming slasher entry that will include time travel elements. Those are just a few of the complications from behind the camera, but there are plenty from the onscreen talent as well.
One huge impediment to the future of the Happy Death Day and Freaky crossover is Kathryn Newton, who plays final-girl-turned-killer-and-back-again Millie Kessler. She will be taking on the role of Cassie Lang, the character originally played by Abby Ryder Fortson, in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, a role that may continue in other entries in the franchise. Given these commitments, it would likely be difficult to get all the key creatives in the same room together, let alone on the same set for weeks at a time.
