Happy Death Day 3 Not Dead, Blumhouse Has A Plan

Producer Jason Blum confirms Happy Death Day 3 is still in development and teases that "something is stirring" regarding the horror threequel. The slasher comedy series brings a sci-fi twist to its horror subgenre as college student Tree Gelbman, played by Jessica Rothe, finds herself stuck in a time loop in which she is hunted by a killer on the night of her birthday. In order to break the cycle, Tree must figure the identity of the killer and learn a bit about herself in the process.

The first Happy Death Day film proved to be a critical and commercial hit for Blumhouse and Universal Pictures, bringing in over $125 million against its $4.8 million production budget and receiving favorable comparisons to the similarly premised Groundhog Day. This success led to the 2019 sequel, Happy Death Day 2U, which revealed the cause of the time loop as a quantum reactor gone awry that subsequently sends her to an alternate universe. Though receiving similarly positive reviews from critics, it took a bit of a hit at the box office, only bringing in $64 million against its $9 million budget, seemingly putting plans for a Happy Death Day 3 to bed, though exciting new developments may be on their way.

During a recent AMA on Twitter, Jason Blum opened up about Happy Death Day 3 and its extended development. When asked for an update regarding the horror threequel, Blum cryptically teased that "something is stirring" for those looking for positive news on the project. Check out Blum's response below:

Development on Happy Death Day 3 was technically confirmed by writer/director Christopher Landon in late 2020 with Rothe set to reprise her role and he and Blumhouse awaiting approval from Universal for the script. The time since has seen a rollercoaster of updates from Landon and Blum, with both teasing potential news coming throughout 2021 though the latter reaffirming the challenge to sell the threequel given the underperformance of Happy Death Day 2U at the box office. Blum's new teases, however, should come as exciting news for those hungry to see more time-looping horror shenanigans with Tree, namely after his and Landon's success with last year's body-swapping horror comedy Freaky.

Blum's tease that something is stirring for Happy Death Day 3 also comes at an opportune moment as Landon recently wrapped production on his Netflix movie, We Have a Ghost. With his schedule now open and he and Blum clearly eager to reunite with one another, regardless of the poor reception to the Landon-penned Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin, the door is now open for news regarding the slasher. Only time will tell if a proper Happy Death Day 3 is announced or a fan-desired crossover with Freaky.
