What happened in Happy Death Day 2U's Blu-ray deleted scene and why was it cut from the movie? Described as Groundhog Day meets Scream, Christopher Landon’s 2017 time loop slasher Happy Death Day stars Jessica Rothe as Theresa “Tree” Gelbman – a college student who is murdered by a masked killer on her birthday but finds herself repeatedly reliving the day until she is able to discover her killer’s identity. The movie was a big hit critically and commercially and a sequel – Happy Death Day 2U, also directed by Landon – followed in 2019.

Happy Death Day 2U introduced a sci-fi twist that saw Tree Gelbman transported to another dimension by way of an experimental quantum reactor built by fellow students Ryan (Phi Vu), Samar (Suraj Sharma) and Dre (Sarah Yarkin). There, Tree was forced to relive a different version of the same hellish day, enduring her own death again and again with a brand-new masked maniac hot on her tail. While the sequel wasn’t quite as well-received as its predecessor, it nevertheless pleased fans of the original who hoped it might lead to a third film.

Happy Death Day 2U was released on Blu-ray in May 2019. Alongside extras that included a gag reel and featurette discussing the concept of the movie’s time loop, the Blu-ray also featured a scene that didn’t make it into the final cut. Running at around two minutes long, the deleted scene takes place when Tree has been hospitalized after her injuries from repeatedly dying caused her to faint. After wrongly deducing serial killer John Tombs (Rob Mello) is this timeline’s culprit she steals a gun and goes after him.

In Happy Death Day 2U's deleted scene Tree runs into a cop – who gives chase after the seemingly crazy woman wearing only a hospital gown and brandishing a gun – and hides from him in a room with an MRI scanner. Just as he’s about to find her, the cop is reprimanded by a nurse for trying to enter a room that houses what is basically a giant magnet with his gun cocked. Meanwhile, Tree listens on seemingly realizing her own gun and the MRI machine could’ve caused a major ruckus.

The Blu-ray’s deleted scene relates to the ending of the horror sequel when Tree confronts the killer (whose identity won’t be spoiled here) and activates the MRI scanner’s magnetic charge and uses it to stab the villain with a screwdriver. Christopher Landon hasn’t specifically stated why the scene was cut from Happy Death Day 2U but it was likely edited out so as not to spoil Tree’s final showdown with the real killer.
