[This video and post contain MILD SPOILERS for Hannibal season 3.]
Bryan Fuller's critically-acclaimed cult hit series Hannibal - starring Mads Mikkelsen as brilliant serial killer Dr. Hannibal "The Cannibal" Lecter - is gearing up to begin its third season. The show will continue to loosely adapt and rearrange plot/character elements from Thomas Harris' Hannibal Lecter novels as Fuller and his fellow writers choose to - with season three poised to lift select material from the Hannibal Rising, Red Dragon, and Hannibal novels, as it were.
Season two concluded with several characters being left on the verge of death, while Lecter and Dr. Bedelia Du Maurier (Gillian Anderson) caught a plane ride across the pond to Europe. The relationship between those two characters - that of a psychiatrist and his psychiatrist, on the surface - has always been an intriguing one, not least of all because the pair have so far been cautious (and, in many ways, cunning), regarding what they say to one another.
A newly-released featurette for Hannibal season three makes it crystal clear: their relationship in particular will very much be placed under a microscope, as the episodes ahead will reveal more truths about their respective natures. Give that new Hannibal featurette a watch, above.
Hannibal and Bedelia's duplicitous deeds in Europe could easily be one of the highlights of the series' third season - a story thread that, by the look of it, may well resemble The Talented Mr. Ripley, only featuring Dr. Lecter as the lead (and shot in the same eery style that Fuller's Hannibal series has been to date).
However, it won't be long until Will Graham's (Hugh Dancy) story intersects with the Hannibal/Bedelia thread, as he sets out to find the two runaway doctors - and as is noted in the above preview, Dr. Lecter's shaken confidence (due to Will having effectively deceived him in season two) will prove to be his Achille's Heel during this European manhunt. And speaking of "manhunt"...
Francis "The Tooth Fairy" Dolarhyde - previously played by Tom Noonan in Michael Mann's Manhunter and portrayed by Ralph Fiennes in Brett Ratner's Red Dragon - shall be appearing on Hannibal season three. The above clip provides a nice early look at Richard Armitage (The Hobbit trilogy) as the heavily-tattooed, bodybuilding, highly-disturbed killer in action. It's not quite clear yet how Dolarhyde on the Hannibal TV show will differ from previous iterations of the character and his story, but it's yet another interesting piece to the larger puzzle that is season three.
Indeed, it's clear that Fuller and his writers are going to continue re-shaping and messing around with Harris' source material as they see fit - potentially giving rise to their best season narrative yet. Add to that a cast that's stronger than ever - including returning players Jack Crawford (Laurence Fishburne) and Dr. Alana Bloom (Caroline Dhavernas), both of whom seeemingly survived the bloody showdown with Dr. Lecter in the season two conclusion - and Hannibal season three seems to have a good deal of promise. Let the hunt begin...
Hannibal season three will air on NBC starting June 4th, 2015.
