With Hanna officially renewed for season 2, when will it arrive, and what will the story be about? Amazon's reboot of the 2011 action thriller starring Saoirse Ronan and directed by Joe Wright (Darkest Hour) mimicked the events of the Hanna film, but then went beyond it by opening up a larger universe to be further explored in a potential Hanna season 2.

In Hanna season 1, Esme Creed-Miles took over the title role, with Joel Kinnaman playing her 'father' Erik Heller and Mireille Enos as their nemesis, CIA agent Marissa Wiegler. Hanna was born to be a genetically enhanced super soldier as part of the CIA's Utrax program, but at the behest of her late mother Johanna (Joanna Kulig), Erik stole baby Hanna from Utrax and hid her in the Romanian forest. After training Hanna in combat and survival tactics for 15 years, Erik attempted to find a way to give Hanna a new life, which brought them both into conflict with Marissa and other agents of the CIA led by Jerome Sawyer (Khalid Abdalla).

Hanna is also a coming-of-age drama about teen rebellion, as Hanna escaped from her pursuers and was able to experience life as a normal teenager in London alongside Sophie (Rhianne Barreto), the friend Hanna made while she was on the run in Morocco. Even with all of the international action and turmoil in the 8 episodes of season 1, there is even more story for Hanna season 2 to tell.

Hanna Has Been Renewed by Amazon for Season 2

Hanna Season 1

Amazon officially renewed Hanna for season 2 just two weeks after season 1's release. Amazon is known for giving speedy renewals to its hit series; for instance, Jack Ryan was renewed for season 2 in April 2018, 4 months before season 1 even released. The John Krasinski-led action/espionage series was then granted a season 3 renewal in February 2019, months before season 2's release. Thematically, Jack Ryan and Hanna compliment one another well, so fans of action thrillers will have plenty to look forward to in the coming year.

Hanna season 2 will premiere globally on Amazon Prime on Friday, July 3, 2020. Amazon announced the Hanna series in May 2017, and pre-production and casting lasted for nearly a year before cameras rolled in March 2018. Hanna was originally expected to be released in late-2018, but was ultimately scheduled for March 2019, a year after principal photography began in Hungary, Spain, Slovakia, and the United Kingdom. However, with the main cast and creative team already in place, the turnaround time for Hanna season 2 ended up considerably shorter.

Dermot Mulroney on The Purge TV Show

In September 2019, five new cast additions were announced for season 2 of Hanna. The highest profile add is Dermot Mulroney, set to play John Carmichael, a former mentor of Marissa's who will take over her antagonistic role toward Hanna. Meanwhile Anthony Welsh will portray Leo Garner, a member of Carmichael's Utrax operations team responsible for indoctrinating the program's new recruits. Cherelle Skeete plays Terri Miller, a CIA officer joining the Utrax program in a vital role. Lastly, Severine Howell-Meri and Gianna Kiehl are onboard as new Utrax trainees Helen and Jules.

Hanna Season 2 Story

Hanna Season 1

Hanna season 1 not only rebooted the story from the film, it drastically expanded Hanna's universe and set the stage for the story to continue in season 2. By the ending of season 1, Hanna had learned about and met the dozens of other genetically enhanced super soldiers of the Utrax Regenesis program - essentially, she has many 'sisters'. However, with the exceptionof recruit 249 (Yasmin Monet Prince), whose real name is Clara, all of the Utrax trainees rebuffed Hanna's attempts to 'save' them and voluntarily left with the U.S. military. This no doubt sets up a future conflict of Hanna (and Clara) vs. her 'sisters,' since season 1 deliberately did not have Hanna fight any of them.

Like the film, Erik Heller died at the end, which essentially makes Hanna an orphan who is forced to make her own way in a hostile world where she continues to be a target of the CIA and their unseen supervisor named Norris. However, the series made a big change by keeping Marissa alive; she concluded the season as Hanna's ally, albeit one she can't trust. It's also possible Sophie and her family can return in season 2 to continue Hanna's education into teenage life. Hanna returned to her refuge in the forest with Clara at the end of season 1, but it won't take much to lure her back into action in Hanna season 2.

Hanna Season 2 Trailer

In April 2020, Amazon released a teaser trailer for Hanna season 2, which while it doesn't reveal much, is enough to intrigue. The teaser features new villain John Carmichael (Dermot Mulroney) observing Hanna through a hidden camera, but she seems to somehow notice she's being watched, and stares into the lens straight back at him.
