June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss) belongs with Luke Bankole (O-T Fagbenle) and not Nick Blaine (Max Minghella) on The Handmaid's Tale. With Luke back in June's life, a riveting love triangle has emerged between June, Luke, and Nick, and both fans and cast members have strong opinions on which person June should choose to be with.

Although Luke and June were separated during her seven years in Gilead, the series used flashbacks to chronicle their love story. Flipping back and forth between the past and the present showed the parallels and contrasts of her experiences falling in love and becoming a mother both pre- and post-Gilead. As someone who has endured years of trauma, there's a dichotomy that exists within June, and her love for both Luke and Nick represents one-half of her as a whole. Although Luke and June are trying to repair their marriage, her reunion with Nick in season 4, episode 9, "Progress", reinforced their physical and emotional connection.

Regardless of their reconnection in The Handmaid's Tale season 4, June should be with Luke, not Nick, because Luke and June share several things together, whereas she doesn't with Nick. Common theories suggest their meeting at the Maria Magdalena Academy sets Nick up to be a hero who will sacrifice himself to save Hannah, but the wedding ring he slides on his finger hints otherwise. It's a reminder that while June suffered as a prisoner of the totalitarian regime, Nick ascended within the ranks of the Gilead power structure. Even with his influence, Nick never directly saved June's life nor kept her out of harm's way. Despite Nick's brief scene as a doting dad, he's been largely ambivalent about Nichole, and he refused to intervene on Nichole's behalf when the Waterfords waged their public campaign to get her back from Canada.

June and Luke in The Handmaid's Tale

Meanwhile, Luke has been raising Nick's daughter, showing more paternal instinct than her biological father. While June was fighting to save their daughter from inside Gilead (only to be devastated when June learned Hannah was scared of her), Luke worked in Canada towards the same goal. Luke took a bullet for his wife and child, and he stayed faithful even after June told him to move on. June broke his heart every time she chose to stay in Gilead, but he respected all of her choices, and he encouraged her to see Nick in private, knowing she's still in love with him. A big part of June feels she's not worthy of Luke following her indoctrination into Gilead's culture of violence, rage, and vengeance, whereas Nick understands and embraces that part of her.

June has a long way to go on her journey to recover from her trauma, and Luke should be a part of the process. They're married, they have a daughter together, and they are both determined to get Hannah back. Nick is now married, which he hides from June, knowing it could change how she feels about him. More importantly, he and June's opposing political and religious ideologies are a much bigger obstacle now that she's on the other side of the border. Nick and June are tethered together by pain and suffering. What happy memories do they share?
