A leaked poster has shown the assembled cast of Solo: A Star Wars Story. The marketing for Solo, the next Star Wars anthology film, is now in full gear.
Lucasfilm released the first teaser at the Super Bowl, with the full Solo trailer arriving the following morning. Then, the studio unveiled a host of Solo character posters focused on the film's core cast, including Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo. These materials have been followed up by a raft of interviews and official set photos.
Now, an intriguing poster has leaked on to Reddit - and it seems to show a very different style of marketing, . Most Star Wars posters are simplistic in design, and fans often complain that they're quite generic. They're usually the kind of thing that please the marketing departments, focusing purely on the stars' faces. The amount of space given for each character is usually dictated by the marketability of the actor and their character. It's an approach that was pioneered by the Star Wars books back in the '90s, and has become standard for the franchise. Sony followed the same approach with a much-maligned poster for Spider-Man: Homecoming last year, giving Robert Downey Jr. particular prominence due to his marketability.
UPDATE: Disney/Lucasfilm has now officially released this Solo poster online. Check it out, below:
In this case, though, the poster is unusually creative; it feels almost like a poster for an old Western. The main cast can be seen in the stylized word "SOLO," with Han's visage hovering above them. Some of the images are recycled from earlier teaser posters, which followed a similar design. Ehrenreich stands in a typical Han Solo pose, recreating marketing from the Original Trilogy. Emilia Clarke's mysterious character Qi'ra gets the central position, looking suitably roguish in her own right. She's flanked by Donald Glover's Lando and Joonas Suotamo's Chewbacca. Finally, Phoebe Waller-Bridge's female droid, L3-37, and Woody Harrelson's Beckett can be found at either far side. Underneath, there's a simplistically styled pursuit scene. The Falcon is jetting through space, with TIE Fighters pursuing it.
It's worth noting that this may not be the final version. It's a little too basic, and doesn't have credits on the bottom. Even if this is only a teaser rather than a finished product, it suggests that Lucasfilm is choosing to market Solo in a very different way. The poster creates a strong sense of tone for the film, a nostalgic Western with a whimsical edge. Although Ehrenreich's Solo dominates, Clarke's Qi'ra seems particularly prominent, to the extent that she feels almost like a co-star. The fact that she's flanked by Original Trilogy characters suggests Lucasfilm is very confident of her portrayal, and the studio clearly believe Qi'ra will be a major draw.
The marketing for Solo has only just begun. Still, this leaked poster suggests it's going to be very different to Lucasfilm's typical Star Wars approach. In a year full of blockbuster hits, a strong marketing campaign could well make sure this film sticks out from the crowd.
