A fan has crafted an extended supercut trailer of the first Solo: A Star Wars Story teaser along with the spot for the film that debuted on Super Bowl Sunday. It’s been a long and agonizing wait for Star Wars fans for the first look at studio footage for Solo, especially given the peaks and valleys the film has already been through with the hiring and firing of co-directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, and the quick hiring of Oscar-winning director Ron Howard to finish principal photography, do reshoots and ultimately shape up the film in time for its Memorial Day weekend release this coming May.
Fans got more than they bargained for in the last 24 hours with not only a 45-second ad during NBC’s broadcast of Super Bowl LII, but an even longer look at the upcoming film with additional footage for Solo when a one minute 50-second teaser debuted early Monday morning on ABC’s Good Morning America. It finally gave fans their long-awaited first peek at Alden Ehrenreich in action playing the younger version of the character Harrison Ford made famous in the first Star Wars film in 1977, following a partially obscured look at the young Han Solo in the last few seconds of the Super Bowl teaser.
Now, just about 12 hours after the Solo teaser debut, YouTube channel sonnyboo has edited together the footage along with the big game spot. Starting out with footage that was seen at the beginning of both the Super Bowl ad and the teaser, where Solo is flipping around the controls in the Millennium Falcon, the supercut jumps into the footage where the future scruffy-lookin’ nerf herder meets with an Imperial officer, saying, “I’m going to be a pilot … best in the galaxy,” before the iconic Lucasfilm logo appears on screen.
From there, the rest of the Super Bowl spot is carefully woven within the teaser footage that was released Monday morning, being presented in such a natural way that it feels like the supercut could have been released by the studio itself. The flow of the events in the extended trailer is essentially the same as the teaser trailer, with the Super Bowl trailer essentially filling in gaps to help give the footage more context. The combined running time of the supercut, which clocks in at 1 minute and 54 seconds is actually less than if you ran the Super Bowl ad and the teaser trailers back to back, since we’re not getting repeats of the Lucasfilm logo, the “This Summer” teaser and the film’s title treatment. The supercut has one notable flaw, though, as Solo’s line about being the best pilot in the galaxy is repeated within the first minute, even though it repeated as narration the second time around.
While the new Solo footage from the past 24 hours no doubt excited some fans and perhaps disappointed others, the supercut has no doubt inspired at least one fan enough to imagine the possibilities for the film by putting everything we’ve seen together for an even more thrilling look at Solo. The studio’s move to feature two separate peeks at the film in such a short timespan was a necessary move to quell the fears of the tumultuous events surrounding last spring, and by combining that footage together in such short order, the trailer supercut shows that there may be more to Solo than fans think.
