A new showrunner will take over production if season 2 of Paramount Plus' Halo TV series is picked up. Developed by Bungie, the original Xbox game debuted in 2001 with a central sci-fi story about a long-brewing, interplanetary war. The POV game was a massive commercial and critical success that spawned an ongoing series and media franchise. Its latest development is a television adaptation based on Halo's storyline.

Variety reports that Halo's showrunner will not be returning after season 1 concludes production. Current showrunner Steven Kane has reportedly decided to leave the project, citing personal reasons. The show has undergone a difficult production process involving multiple delays due to COVID, and Kane has been filming in Budapest since 2019. Kane is the second showrunner to depart the project and follows former co-showrunner Kyle Killen, who bowed out before production began.

Although Halo has not yet been picked up for season 2, the adaptation is expected to draw a large viewership and will probably live on past its first season. Paramount+, 343 Industries, and ViacomCBS are clearly betting on Halo's success with the high-budget project. Kane has worked as a television writer and producer on a broad range of shows including The CloserNCIS, and American Dad!, so his successor could come from anywhere.

The series will be based on the Halo games' central battle between an ancient extraterrestrial enemy and humanity circa the year 2500. The show's official logline teases "an epic 26th-century conflict between humanity and an alien threat known as the Covenant. Halo will weave deeply drawn personal stories with action, adventure and a richly imagined vision of the future." Pablo Schreiber has been cast in the lead, and Halo will air in early 2022.
