Paramount+ unveils the official Halo trailer revealing a full look at Master Chief and his mission in the series adaptation of the hit video game. The adaptation of the Xbox franchise will be led by Pablo Schreiber as Master Chief Petty Officer John-117 with Jen Taylor carrying her role of Cortana into the show and Natascha McElhone as Dr. Catherine Halsey, a scientist for the United Nations Space Command and creator of the Spartan-II project. The Halo cast also includes Charlie Murphy, Bokeem Woodbine, Yerin Ha, Shabana Azmi, Olive Gray, Kate Kennedy and Danny Sapani.

Multiple efforts to adapt Halo to screen have come over the years beginning with a film adaptation at 20th Century Fox and Universal Pictures with Peter Jackson set to executive produce and Neill Blomkamp attached to direct. This would languish in development hell, however, as the film went through multiple rewrites and financial deals between the studio and Microsoft and eventually efforts were shifted to a TV show in 2015. Following shifts between Showtime and Paramount+ and various showrunners, Halo would finally get underway at the streaming platform with a 10-episode season.

The first Halo show trailer doesn't offer much in the way of insight into the story of the series, though it does seem to point towards a more divergent take on the source material than a direct adaptation of the plot. The show has received some controversy from fans amidst its development cycle since it was revealed that the daughter to iconic character Captain Keyes grew up as an orphan raised by the Covenant that developed a contempt for humanity, while also drawing attention after 343 Industries exec Kiki Wolfkill teased a different take on Master Chief. The trailer doesn't quite expand on how the show will explore this concept, though between its mix of new and returning game locations and primarily highlighting its supporting roster of characters, it does look to be bringing its own approach to the material.

Arguably the most exciting takeaway from the Halo show trailer is the production design put into bringing Master Chief and the sci-fi world of the 26th century galactic war to life on screen. Master Chief''s suit and the Spartan Squad are perfect recreations of their looks in Microsoft's video games and the visual effects certainly look befitting of the show's reported $200 million budget. Only time will tell how the series adapts the franchise to screen when Halo premieres on Paramount+ sometime in 2022.
