Paramount+'s live-action Halo TV series hints that it'll break the biggest Master Chief tradition from the video games. The upcoming series is a rough adaptation of Bungie's incredibly popular first-person shooter. Hollywood spent years trying to turn Halo into a live-action property, and the Paramount+ show is the end result of failed movie ideas and multiple attempts at a TV series. Due to the perception of the video game movie curse, those familiar with the video games are hoping that Halo is the latest adaption to buck that trend and prove to be worth the wait.

One of the most important parts of Halo's success or failure will be how it brings Master Chief to life. The Spartan soldier is one of the most recognizable video game characters ever created, so the pressure is on the series to not mess him up. As one of the most decorated United Nations Space Command soldiers in history, Master Chief plays a central role in the fight against the Covenant - a collection of multiple alien races fighting for control of the galaxy. Halo's first look at Master Chief showed how perfectly the series brought John-117's Spartan armor to life in live-action, which was a huge relief to many. However, there are now signs of the show breaking the character's biggest tradition.

Throughout Master Chief's multiple appearances in the Halo video game franchise, his face was never exposed. The games made it a tradition to not show John's face, even though there are teases of him taking off the helmet. Early marketing materials for Halo indicate that the TV show will take that next step and actually show John's face. The teaser poster for the series showed Master Chief standing with his helmet in hand. This isn't the first time Halo has teased showing the man underneath Master Chief's Spartan armor. Some footage from the series showed John's back outside of the suit, which could mean the show will go further than just showing John's face.

Paramount plus Halo Master Chief Pablo Schreiber

It makes sense that Halo is willing to break Master Chief's biggest tradition. One of the reasons the video games have refused to show John's maskless face is so that gamers can project themselves on the Spartan soldier. That won't quite be the cast with the live-action series, as star Pablo Schrieber has teased Halo shows new sides of Master Chief. The show will look to shape the iconic character in a fresh way and taking the helmet off can help viewers connect with the man under the armor. It is also an opportunity for the series to actually show Pablo Schrieber's face from time to time instead of keeping his face concealed the entire time.

If Halo does break tradition and take Master Chief's helmet off, it should be fascinating to see how often it happens. The helmet and suit make up the character's iconic look, but that also requires Schreiber to act entirely through his movements and voice. It won't be too surprising if Halo takes a similar approach to handle a masked lead character as The Mandalorian. The Star Wars series kept Din Djarin under the Mandalorian helmet for almost the entirety of season 1 until Pedro Pascal's face was finally shown in the finale. Season 2 saw Din break his code and take off the helmet more frequently. Halo could copy this game plan and only show Schreiber's face a few times in season 1.
