This article contains spoilers for Halo episode 6.

The Halo TV show is overplaying the conflict and distrust between the Master Chief and Cortana. The Master Chief is the undeniable hero of the Halo franchise, the Spartan whose career impresses even his fellow Spartans. But, in truth, he rarely stands alone, as it's impossible to imagine John-117 ever defeating the threat of the alien Covenant without the help of the artificial intelligence named Cortana.

Paramount+'s Halo TV series has rewritten Cortana's origin. In the original canon, Cortana is one of countless so-called "Smart AIs," but in the world of the TV show she appears to be the first. Disturbingly, Cortana was created by Dr. Halsey as a means of controlling the Master Chief; in fact, dialogue has suggested Dr. Halsey intends Cortana to actually merge her consciousness with John-117's, vastly amplifying the speed of the Master Chief's thoughts and his ability to process information. Crucially, in Dr. Halsey's view, integration with Cortana would make the Master Chief controllable. She implanted Cortana just in time, because when the Master Chief discovered his true origins he lashed out in rage against Halsey, who would have been killed had Cortana not intervened.

Unfortunately, Halo is overplaying the conflict between Cortana and the Master Chief. Far from operating as an efficient team, they're operating at cross-purposes, and in episode 5 their conflicting priorities granted the Covenant a major victory and meant the UNSC lost the larger Keystone. In Halo episode 6, the Master Chief's distrust of Cortana escalated to the point where he's intending to try to extract her implant; spurned, Cortana has sought out Dr. Halsey for advice, an act John-117 would see as a further betrayal. The relationship between Cortana and the Master Chief feels almost irrecoverable, meaning it will be hard to convincingly have the pair reconcile to take on the dynamic they do in the games.

Cortana in the Halo series

The problem, of course, is that the stakes are simply increasing. Halo episode 6 saw the Master Chief granted a vision of a Halo Ring in a mystical experience, and it's clear he's now going to seek it out. The Covenant spy Makee experienced the same vision, and John-117 seems to be beginning to trust Makee, perhaps even attracted to her because of everything they have in common. In Halo, the Covenant's so-called "Sacred Rings" are forces that threaten to sterilize the entire galaxy of life. Humanity cannot afford for the Master Chief and Cortana to be at odds.

It's possible Halo will resolve this problem by establishing a new status quo. Dr. Halsey could offer the Master Chief a compromise, extracting Cortana from his body but implanting the chip in his Mjolnir armor instead. This would allow John-117 to retain his independence, removing the power Cortana has over him that he finds so threatening, while allowing Cortana to continue working with the Master Chief. It would also mean Halo transformed the relationship between John-117 and Cortana into one more like the original games. As things stand, though, the Master Chief's distrust for Cortana is so profound it's difficult to see him accepting even that idea.
