Halo Season 2: Fear the Walking Dead Producer Eyed For New Showrunner

Paramount+ confirms the Halo season 2 renewal a month ahead of season 1 of the sci-fi series premiering on the streaming platform. Development on an adaptation of 343 Industries and Bungie's video game franchise has languished in hell for over a decade, with a film incarnation planned first before transitioning to the small screen. Halo began at Showtime with Kyle Killen attached as showrunner/developer but would later change hands to Paramount+ with Steven Kane taking the reins.

Halo is set in the 26th century and explores the heated conflict between humanity and the alien threat known as the Covenant, with the United Nations Space Command taking the fight to them. The plot specifically revolves around Master Chief Petty Officer John-117 and his team of genetically enhanced Spartan soldiers as they seek to protect humanity on the titular world. Despite its rocky development and large budget, it appears the creatives behind Halo are very confident in its future potential.

With just over a month remaining until the show's premiere, Paramount+ took to Twitter to reveal Halo has been renewed for season 2 ahead of its season 1 debut. Brave New World alum David Wiener has been attached to take over as showrunner for the next chapter of the series. The Halo season 2 renewal coming a month ahead of season 1's premiere should mark a promising sign for fans of the video games who felt skeptical for the adaptation. Though it's not unheard of for a streaming platform or network to renew a show before it even airs, the sheer cost of the production for Halo would have made it understandable for Paramount+ to wait to see how it performs before picking it up for more. Netflix recently served as a key example of such as they invested a large amount of money into their live-action Cowboy Bebop series, with developer Christopher Yost having teased that season 2 plans were in the works ahead of time, but due to its underperformance the streamer would ultimately cancel it.

Paramount+ renewing Halo for season 2 doesn't come as too much of a surprise, however, as the streamer has been exploring its options for a future for the series adaptation. Word first began swirling earlier this month that Fear the Walking Dead's David Wiener was in talks to take over as showrunner for season 2 after Steven Kane stepped down due to the amount of time required for the show, with Wiener now confirmed for the next chapter of the show. The wait for Halo is nearly over as the series premieres on Paramount+ on March 24.
