The developers of Halo Infinite have spoken up about the game's graphics after its seemingly lackluster reveal. Halo Infinite was announced two years ago at E3 and has had limited reveals ever since. Since it was announced that this would be a far more open-world game than other Halo titles, fans have been desperate to see some of this new game in action.

The eight minutes of gameplay that arrived last week showed off some new features to the Halo series, as well as a clear graphical change from previous games. Ever since that revelation, people have been making fun of Infinite's design all over Twitter and Reddit.  The gameplay came with some less-than-stellar screenshots from Xbox, which only added to the fire. This is a change from previous Halo iterations, as the franchise is often hailed for its stunning graphics and art design. Already, tons of people have written up analysis articles comparing the looks of Halo 4 to this new gameplay and what they think should have been done.

In the most recent community update, the devs opened up about people's reactions to the gameplay trailer and answered some common questions from the internet. It starts with an honest acknowledgement of the complaints some fans have before the article, penned by Halo Community Manager at 343 Industries John Junyszek, goes into any explanation. "First, we want to acknowledge that yes, we’ve heard the feedback coming from parts of the community regarding the visuals in the Halo Infinite campaign demo." From there the community manager breaks the complaints into two categories, between those who hate the art style and those who are worried about visual fidelity. Junyszek clarifies that the art style for Infinite is a return to Halo's classic art style with "cleaner" models and less noise – but not with less detail. He also said, "while we appreciate this may not be everyone’s personal preference, we stand by this decision," so the new brighter, smoother style is here to stay.

As for visual fidelity, Junyszek promises that the build shown was a work in progress and that the complaints the developer has heard are fair. 343 Industries was already working on a number of recent complaints prior to the gameplay unveil, while other issues brought to light are now being discussed and addressed. Still, it was promised that players will "have a beautiful world for players to explore when we launch." The community update also answers some questions about multiplayer and game options, while specifically not answering some questions about the story. The game will come with a working split-screen for couch co-op and will be available on Steam and Xbox Game Pass – in addition to all current and upcoming Xbox consoles.

Halo Infinite's new art style is a definite change, even though it harkens back to "classic" Halo.  It's true that it's good for games when developers get out of patterns and try new things, especially when it comes to art design. Nobody liked how Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker looked when it was announced, but now it's almost universally beloved. Change isn't always a winner, but it's still good to see large studios trying new things.
