Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Halloween Ends!!Halloween Ends makes one huge retcon to the franchise, making one of Halloween Kills' most important moments completely meaningless. While the 2018 Halloween trilogy does a lot of retconning, making every sequel before it non-canonical, the element that Halloween Ends retcons completely destroys the little character Michael Myers had in Halloween Kills for no apparent reason. There's a lot to complain about with Halloween Ends, but one of its biggest problems is its big change to Michael Myers' original home.

One Halloween Ends Easter egg can be spotted among the various newspaper clippings that Laurie Strode keeps pinned on her wall, which chronicle the timeline of the Michael Myers attacks for use in Laurie's memoir. One of the headlines reads "Horror House of Haddonfield Condemned," with the article going on to explain that the Myers home that Judith Myers was murdered in has finally been demolished. This is the only time the old Myers house is addressed in the film, with the demolition happening off-screen between the two films. However, with the Myers house playing such a big role in Halloween Kills, this retcon just doesn't make sense.

Halloween Kills dedicates a significant portion of its runtime to the original Myers house, with Michael's main goal seemingly being to get to his childhood home. Since the events of 1978's Halloween, John "Big John" Soto and his husband John "Little John" Massey have moved into the home, telling the story of Michael Myers to trick-or-treaters in order to scare them. To Big John and Little John, the Michael Myers murders are a source of humor - that is, until Michael returns and kills them both.

Michael goes out of his way to reclaim his childhood home in Halloween Kills, with that being one of his only motivations throughout the franchise. The angry Haddonfield mob even figures out that Michael is headed there, with them tracking him down to the Myers house. The movie's biggest kill takes place in Judith's old bedroom, and the final time Michael is seen is a shot of him staring out of the window of his old home. Over and over again, Halloween Kills stresses the importance of the Myers home to Michael - only for Halloween Ends to retcon it out of existence. The film doesn't do anything creative with the storyline the ending of Halloween Kills set up, with Halloween Ends barely even focusing on Michael, meaning that the retcon was completely meaningless.

What Was The Point Of Michael Myers' Window Staring In Halloween Kills

The Halloween franchise has often been criticized for the implications of Michael Myers' violence, as most of the films conclude that Michael is pure evil rather than exploring the conditions that lead to his crimes. That's essentially what the Rob Zombie Halloween reboot was made to explore, as it portrays a more sympathetic Michael and a less credible Dr. Loomis. With its themes of mob justice and criticisms of reactionary thought, Halloween Kills attempted to subtly explore Michael's arrested development, with his obsession with his childhood home reflecting his stunted growth. Although this theme wasn't explored nearly enough, the ending of the film juxtaposes the vengeful citizens of Halloween's Haddonfield with a shot of Michael staring out his window, driving this concept home. With the evolution of newcomer Corey Cunningham, Halloween Ends attempts to actually explore how a serial killer could come about, but in doing so it completely throws out the Michael Myers story that Halloween Kills was setting up.
