The follow-up to David Gordon Green's 2018 Halloween movie, Halloween Kills, is one of the most highly anticipated horror movies of 2020, and fans are eager to soak up every detail. In doing so, set pictures that were released may have pointed to a key detail that suggests a flashback to 1978 could be utilized during the next movie.

Blumhouse has confirmed that Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends, in 2021, will wrap up John Carpenter's saga of Michael Myers and Laurie Strode, which originated in 1978. Jamie Lee Curtis will return to play Laurie Strode in Halloween Kills and, if she survives, presumably will do the same in the third film. Nick Castle, who originated the role of Michael Myers alongside Tony Moran, and James Jude Courtney play Myers in the new installments. Other cast members include Judy Greer, Anti Matichak, Dylan Arnold, Robert Longstreet, and Charles Cyphers. It was also announced that Kyle Richards would reprise the role of Lindsay Wallace, which she played as a child, and Anthony Michael Hall would play Tommy Doyle, one of the children in Laurie's care (alongside Lindsay) in the original movie.

In a series of set photos and other reveals from Halloween Kills, one in particular has struck fans as interesting because of what it could mean for not only this movie, but the trilogy on the whole. Michael Myers, in the 2018 film, donned his old mask again; it was visibly weathered and showed signs of aging, as it was 40 years old. Yet, in one photo, his mask appears to be brand new, which strongly implies there will be a flashback sequence in some regard, though this hasn't been confirmed. Adding to this speculation is Curtis, who has been quoted as saying that Danny McBride and David Gordon Green "...connected the dots for forty years, now they’re going back to really unpack the first movie, bringing back all those characters whose lives were affected by what happened in 1978."

Halloween Kills Flashback To 1978 Might Show Michael's Original Killing Spree

If Halloween Kills does, indeed, flash back to the night Michael came home in 1978 to slice up Haddonfield, it will be interesting to see which characters are included. In Carpenter's original Halloween, most of Myers' advances were focused on Laurie, her friends, Lindsay, and Tommy. However, there's a clear body count - as confirmed again in the 2018 remake - so there's not much extra that could be done there. However, there's a possibility that there were facets of The Shape's rampage we didn't see. During scenes of Carpenter's film that focused elsewhere - on Laurie, etc - it might be a unique angle to re-adapt some of that from Michael's perspective, and perhaps even show the same style of completely ruthless abandon that he deployed with his killing spree after his escape 40 years later, when he was much older.

Lonnie Elam, who will be played by Robert Longstreet in Halloween Kills, could also be included as part of the flashback, as is possibly shown in the set photos. This would be an interesting reason to bring back his character in the sequel, especially if he had some run-in with The Shape that was previously unknown based on what was disclosed by Carpenter's film. It might even give him motive to protect his family down the road if he has encountered Michael once before, in his youth, and lived to tell the tale. Perhaps it will be a point of bonding for him and Laurie, especially as their granddaughter and son have been romantically tied in the past. Regardless of where Halloween Kills decides to take the story, much of the plot will likely stay under wraps until a trailer is released later in the year.
