The following contains spoilers for Halloween Ends.

Halloween Ends’ Michael Myers actor addresses whether he will return to the franchise. Nine actors have taken on the role of Michael Myers over the course of the long-running Halloween franchise. For the last three films, the man behind the mask has mostly been James Jude Courtney, with original Myers actor Nick Castle stepping in for brief cameo appearances.

Given his imposing physical size and extensive stunt acting background, it’s no surprise that Courtney made an effective Myers for H40 trilogy director David Gordon Green. And the actor indeed needed to call on every ounce of his stunt acting ability for the trilogy-capping Halloween Ends, as Myers faced off with Jamie Lee Curtis’ Laurie Strode one last time. The highly-anticipated final battle between the Halloween franchise’s two main characters certainly lived up to expectations, as Laurie and her granddaughter Allyson (Andi Matichak) teamed up to brutally unmask and kill their boogeyman.

The very violent and undeniably decisive ending of Halloween Ends now has fans wondering about the future of the Halloween franchise. For his part, Myers actor Courtney seems done with the whole thing after putting in one last performance. Speaking exclusively to Screen Rant, Courtney talked about his discussions with Green and Curtis about their respective Halloween futures, and indicated they all have come to a final decision. See Courtney’s remarks in the space below:

You know, David, and Jamie and I have talked about this, we're done. We're done. I think, for me, to put this character down, Jamie and I were talking on the set towards the end, knowing that this was the end for us. We kind of compared it to the Super Bowl, I'm 65 years old, she's a year or two younger, but we're not spring chickens, we're both vital, and vibrant, and athletic and youthful, but we're moving in places in our career. I feel like this was a Super Bowl win, I feel like 2018 and Kills were playoffs, and I feel like Halloween Ends was the Super Bowl, and we frickin' won dude. So best to win with a big ring on our hand and walk off into the sunset.

Where Can The Halloween Franchise Go Next

Halloween-Ends-Michael-Myers-Laurie-Strode-1

Halloween Ends puts a decisive capper on the H40 trilogy by not only killing Michael Myers but having the people of Haddonfield use a car-crusher to annihilate his body. But while this latest incarnation of Myers has been erased, the character of Myers likely is not gone from movie screens. One possibility for franchise resurrection is of course the full reboot, with a totally new Michael Myers and maybe even a new Laurie Strode. But if the aim of future Halloween moviemakers is to keep the present timeline alive, there are some possibilities for how that could happen even after Myers' total obliteration.

Halloween Ends indeed seems to set up its own potential successors with the character of Corey, whose unfortunate life leads him to become infected with Myers' malevolence, turning him into a killer. Though Corey himself gets his neck snapped by Myers late in the film, he's not definitively destroyed (he certainly is not thrown into a car-crusher) and therefore by horror movie logic could still come back. Replacing Myers with a new killer obviously smacks of Friday the 13th: A New Beginning, a film that is almost universally reviled by slasher fans. But a future Halloween sequel could perhaps pull off the new-killer trick with Corey or someone else from Haddonfield as the man behind the mask. All that can be said for (near) certain is that Courtney, Curtis and Green won't be back after sticking the landing with Halloween Ends.
