Next year's Halloween Ends will be more contained than Kills, according to producer Malek Akkad. After years of questionable sequels and reboots, the Halloween franchise appeared to get back on track with a 2018 installment that acted as a direct sequel to the 1978 original. The new Halloween arrived with the promise of two sequels, which are tentatively expected to bring the series to a close. Halloween Kills will arrive in October of this year, while Halloween Ends is set for a year after. Both were delayed by the coronavirus pandemic.
With Halloween Kills still months away, little is known about next year's Ends. The 2018 Halloween concluded with the murderous Michael Myers trapped in the burning basement of Laurie Strode's (Jamie Lee Curtis) house. Though it looked like it would be the end for him, Halloween Kills has already confirmed he will escape and set out on another bloody killing spree. The sequel is being hyped as a violent, epic slasher, and fans should be very wary of its massive body count.
While talking to Total Film (via GamesRadar) about Halloween Kills, Akkad provided a major hint about the 2022 follow-up. Akkad explained that "the last one is going to be way more contained." Meanwhile, director David Gordon Green expanded on this by suggesting Halloween Ends will be quite different from the previous installments:
"I get engaged by doing something different. If I was just going to be repetitive, I would hand the reins off to someone else. When you have that opportunity within an established franchise, it’s really fun to think about how you can show different tones and perspectives and evolve."
Should Halloween Ends truly bring the franchise to a close, it would make sense for it to be the more contained movie. Horror franchises rarely have a definitive ending these days, but Halloween Ends can do its best to provide closure to the fans who have eagerly followed each one of Michael's rampages. Additionally, this seems to suggest that Halloween Kills will end with a cliffhanger or two to bridge the gap between movies. Considering how it is planning to be a gory affair, it might have a devastating conclusion.
Green's added comments that Halloween Ends will feel quite different are also interesting. Slasher movies often follow a familiar pattern when it comes to how the villain picks off their victims, but Green is attempting to avoid repetition for the final installment. That makes Halloween Ends sound even more intriguing than it did before. Plot details likely won't emerge until after Halloween Kills debuts, but these few early hints give an idea of what can be expected. There won't be as many dangling plot threads, and it hopefully won't feel repetitive. The future of this franchise is looking bright, which is an odd thing to say for a series with a lot of gruesome murders.
