Horror movies are designed to scare fans with over-the-top monsters, vicious killers, or terrifying real-world situations that prey on our various fears, including the very relatable fears that are explored in horrors that feature babysitters either as victims of a horrifying invasion, the final girl who saves the day, or even the dangerous threat of the film.

With the recent release of The Babysitter: Killer Queen sequel on Netflix, fans are once again exploring the tried and true horror trope as it is explored in fun new ways, and there's no better time than right before Halloween to check out some of the horror genre's best films starring the often at-risk protector of society's children, the babysitter.

Halloween (1978)

John Carpenter terrified babysitters for decades after the release of 1978's Halloween, which saw scream queen Jamie Lee Curtis' Laurie Strode's encounter with the masked murdered Michael Myers while she's babysitting a pair of neighborhood children.

Myers would return to threaten Laurie Strode and other babysitters quite a few more times with over thirty years of sequels and reboots, with the character planning to return in the upcoming Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends.

When A Stranger Calls (1979/2006)

The opening scene of 1979's When A Stranger Calls features Carol Kane's iconic babysitter Jill Johnson as she receives a series of threatening phone calls while watching over children is still considered one of the most terrifying film openings ever.

While the rest of the film turned into more of a police hunt than a horror film, 2006's remake of the same name starred Camilla Belle as Jill and extended the original's opening scene to play on that moment of terror that reveals the calls were "coming from inside the house."

Babysitter Wanted (2008)

2008's Babysitter Wanted follows a young girl looking for a fresh start as she starts college who picks up a babysitting job at a remote farm for an odd young boy, who soon finds herself stalked and harassed by a huge, scarred intruder.

However, while the film sets itself up as a typical home invasion/babysitter horror, the revelations of the mysterious intruder introduce a dark twist to the film that makes it a must-see for fans of the genre.

The House of the Devil (2009)

House of the Devil

Jocelin Donahue starred in Ti West's 2009 The House of the Devil as Samantha Hughes, which saw the young college student as she was forced to pick up a strange babysitter gig that was filled with red flags after the family's patriarch (played by Tom Noonan) revealed that he had no children.

Instead, she was there to care for his elderly mother for the night, though strange occurrences in the house soon turn the strange job in the isolated house upside down with a terrifying twist that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats.

Tormented (2014)

While it was originally known as Berkshire County, 2014's Tormented followed a young woman recovering from a tragic assault who takes a babysitting job at an isolated mansion on Halloween night that soon turns to terror.

After a group of intruders wearing terrifying pig masks invade the mansion, the film turns into a tense cat-and-mouse game throughout the mansion that separates itself from other violent home invasion films by keeping the babysitter one step ahead of her assailants, though she might be dealing with a threat bigger than she could have ever imagined.

All Hallow's Eve (2013)

While fans might be more familiar with Art the Clown from 2016's brutal Terrifier, the homicidal slasher first appeared in 2013's horror anthology All Hallow's Eve, which featured a series of gruesome murders on tape discovered by a babysitter and her young charges.

While each short film explores a different horror tale, Art is featured throughout and even appears in the framing story to further terrorize the babysitter, further cementing his status as one of horror's newest stars by tying his foundations into the classic horror trope.

Emelie (2015)

Sarah Bolger starred in 2015's Emelie as the titular new babysitter who arrives to take care of the Thompson kids, though unbeknownst to the kids, she has actually kidnapped and replaced the real babysitter.

Emelie proceeds to torment the children throughout the evening with a number of disturbing incidents as she eventually reveals her dark motivations, forcing the kids to fight for their survival against the person who was supposed to protect them.

Better Watch Out (2016)

While the Christmas holidays are generally filled with romantic or family-friendly films, horror fans thankfully have quite a few fun options to help celebrate the season, including 2016's home-invasion horror Better Watch Out.

A young boy's plans to make a move on his older teenage babysitter are brutally interrupted by violent intruders, with a dangerous twist further escalating the terror of the evening to make this film stand out in the babysitter genre.

The Babysitter (2017)

The Babysitter Art

McG directed 2017's The Babysitter for Netflix (which recently released the aforementioned sequel Killer Queen) that followed a typical young boy's crush on his babysitter Bee (played by Samara Weaver) that takes a ritualistically violent turn.

Hoping to catch a glimpse of his babysitter's evening activities, young Cole (played by Judah Lewis) discovers Bee involved with a group of satanic teens conducting a ritual that soon finds him in incredible, but often hilarious moments of danger.

The Night Sitter (2018)

2018's The Night Sitter starred Elyse Dufour as a phony babysitter who conned her way into a gig at a well-known paranormal investigator's wealthy mansion in order to clean it out with her crew, though the night takes a paranormal turn when the young boy unlocks a dark supernatural force.

The Night Sitter adds an interesting paranormal twist on the home-invasion genre with the inclusion of the Three Witches that become a threat to all involved, and the film features a beautifully rich color palette that will appeal to fans of Giallo horror classics like Suspiria.
