Hair Love director Matthew A. Cherry is on Hollywood's radar with his upcoming directorial project The Come Up, New Line's latest comedy heist feature. Cherry won the Best Animated Short Film Oscar for Hair Love in February, which is a heartwarming story of an African American father who learns how to do his daughter's hair for the first time--a feat he predicted in an old tweet.

Deadline announced Matthew A. Cherry would direct New Line's The Come Up, and Cherry tweeted some extra details. Written by Emmy-nominated Michael Starrbury from When They See Us, the film's plot is described as a mash-up of Oceans 11 and Friday stemming from an original idea by Sorry to Bother You actor and comedian Jermaine Fowler, who will also star and exec produce. So far, Lil Rel Howery from Get Out and 22 Jump Street's dynamic duo Keith Lucas and Kenneth Lucas will star.

Matthew A. Cherry might just now be standing in the spotlight, but he's been a busy filmmaker for many years - and a successful one at that. Cherry wrote and directed award-winning films The Last Fall and 9 Drives, with the latter shot entirely on an iPhone 6s. His other directorial credits include episodes for Mixed-IshBlack-Ish, and Saved by the Bell, as well as several music videos with Snoop Dogg, Chloe X Halle, and Michelle Williams. If Cherry has proven his talent as a filmmaker without fancy equipment or large budgets, he can only accelerate here on out with major studios and top filmmakers at his back--starting with The Come Up.
