Gwyneth Paltrow's poor memory regarding the MCU has struck again, with Kevin Feige revealing that she was confused by Samuel L. Jackson's presence in Avengers: Endgame. Paltrow is one of the longest-serving members of the combined franchise's cast, having debuted in 2008's Iron Man. She later reprised her role of Pepper Potts in both direct, standalone sequels, as well as in the first team-up movie: The Avengers. Most recently, she appeared in both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, ultimately suiting up and helping the other heroes defeat Thanos' army.

Avengers: Endgame served as the culmination of 11 years and 22 films of Marvel storytelling. Garnering positive reviews, the film was a smash hit from the moment it opened and recently became the highest-grossing film of all time. Seeking to undo Thanos' actions from the previous film, the remaining heroes had to journey through space and time to gather the Infinity Stones. Having attracted the attention of an earlier version of Thanos, however, a final battle ensued, culminating in a last-ditch gambit from Tony Stark, one which saw him harness the power of the stones to wipe out Thanos' forces at the expense of his own life. The film culminated with every known MCU hero turning out to mourn their fallen ally.

Speaking with Empire, Feige once again delved into the logistics of filming Tony Stark's funeral. Scheduling a cast that sprawling and in-demand is no easy feat, which is why the day also doubled as the epic 10th-anniversary photo that was released in early 2018. Given that the funeral, then codenamed "The Wedding", was filmed before numerous standalone installments, there was notable confusion among the cast. While Tom Holland could be forgiven, however, for being stunned by Michelle Pfeiffer's presence, Paltrow's bafflement regarding Jackson's was the source of much amusement. "Gwyneth Paltrow was asking why Sam Jackson was there," Feige said, "and the other actors were jumping in saying, 'What are you talking about? He's Nick Fury! You've been in movies with him.'"

Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts and Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark Iron Man in Spider Man Homecoming

This isn't the first time elements of Paltrow's tenure has slipped from her memory. Appearing on Jon Favreau's new Netflix show, the actress seemed to have no idea that she had been in Spider-Man: Homecoming. A fact that jokily broke Holland's heart when he heard. Only when Favreau detailed the scene in question did she recall, though remained stunned that it had been a Spider-Man film. Given the out-of-sequence filming schedule of the Marvel films, however, Paltrow could probably be forgiven for not knowing which film was which.

Forgetting about Jackson's role as Nick Fury, however, is an entirely different story. Having also debuted in Iron Man, his Nick Fury has been a staple of the franchise ever since. And, thanks to Captain Marvel, he also has one of the most fleshed-out stories in the entire franchise. Thankfully, having now concluded her time with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Paltrow might now have enough time to watch the saga right through to Avengers: Endgame and catch everything and everyone she's missed.
