The most infamous girlfriend of Spider-Man, Gwen Stacy, is returning just in time for Marvel's Judgement Day. The big event promises to be a crossover of epic proportions, fitting for the return of Peter Parker's long-lost love.

What fan of Spider-Man's isn't aware of the painful loss suffered by Peter Parker in the seminal story arc "The Night Gwen Stacy Died?" The young love between Parker and Stacy came to a brutal end when Spider-Man's archenemy, the Green Goblin, tossed her from a bridge causing Gwen's neck to break and Peter to blame himself for years after. Though Gwen has been gone for years, her death has haunted Spider-Man as a painful reminder of his inability to save everyone. However, multiversal variant Spider-Gwen has taken the role as Marvel's de facto Gwen Stacy, giving the character a second chance at a life she was robbed of so long ago.

Of course, that may change now that it appears the 616 Gwen is coming back thanks to a crossover between the Avengers, the X-Men, and the Eternals. In an exclusive with ComicBook.com, Marvel unveiled a special issue of The Amazing Spider-Man that would tie into its upcoming Judgement Day event. The cover, created by series' artist John Romita Jr., shows a shocked Spider-Man gazing at a revived Gwen Stacy, appearing in her most iconic outfit. Details on the issue were hush-hush, but Marvel has called the upcoming release a "very special issue that might break your heart all over again."

The reveal comes hot on the heels of Marvel's recent announcement that Christos Gage and Todd Nauck's Gwen Stacy miniseries would be coming back as an oversized one-shot that would publish its final three issues. Not only that, but the return of Gwen is just the latest shocking development in Zeb Wells and John Romita Jr.'s Amazing Spider-Man series. The first issue revealed that Peter Parker's other greatest love, Mary Jane Watson, is in a committed relationship and the mom of two young children. The return of Gwen may complicate things for Peter, but it may also be a chance to hash out one of the most painful events in his life.

With the world about to face judgement in the upcoming conflict between the X-Men and the Eternals, secrets and truths from many Marvel hero's pasts are going to come to light. Spider-Man has long carried guilt over the death of Gwen Stacy, even though it was Green Goblin that killed her. While Parker may want to carry the burden over Gwen dying, he may have a chance at absolution from a higher power. Will it be enough for him to finally forgive himself? That's something Spider-Man is going to have to figure out when Gwen Stacy makes her return to the Marvel Universe.
