During his battle with the Guardians of the Galaxy, Venom proved that Drax the Destroyer is the ideal host for the symbiote. Although at that time Venom was bonded to Flash Thompson, the symbiotes' odd behavior saw it separated from Flash, insistent on some unclear goal or mission. When the Guardians stood in its way, Venom jumped from Guardian to Guardian, causing all sorts of damage until it settled on Drax whose strength and weapons training made him the final and best host for the symbiote's plans.

After Iron Man vouched for him, Agent Venom left Earth to join the Guardians of the Galaxy, excited to travel to extraterrestrial worlds with the famous intergalactic superhero team. While traveling, Flash realized there was still much he didn't know about the Venom symbiote that allowed him to walk, fight, and become a superhero. This realization occurred around the same time that the Venom symbiote became erratic and difficult to control despite Flash's insistence. After the symbiote took control and eventually attacked his current teammates, the Guardians were able to use special tech given by Tony Stark to neutralize the alien and separate it from Flash. While his original host was unconscious, Venom escaped captivity and found a new host in the Guardians formidable brawler with a limited vocabulary, Groot.

In Guardians of the Galaxy #22 by Brian Michael Bendis, Valerio Schiti, and David Lopez, the Guardians attempt to subdue Venom without hurting its current host or damaging their ship. While they're able to get Groot released, the symbiote slips away into the inner workings of the ship and later gets the drop on Rocket Raccoon. While the Venomized Rocket has no problem injuring or attacking its teammates, a moment of hesitation against Star-Lord sees Drax make a move against him. The symbiote leaves Rocket for yet again another host, this time leaving the Guardians to face a black and red Venomized Drax.

Although any of the other Guardians would make suitable hosts for the alien symbiote, Drax's power and skills would make him not only a dangerous host for any symbiote but any opponent that crosses his path. Created by Jim Starlin, the character formerly known as Arthur Douglas was fueled by his revenge against Thanos, the person responsible for killing his family. Given a new body with a ton of new powers that allowed him to fight not only Thanos but other Marvel powerhouses like Captain Marvel or Adam Warlock, Drax's powers have waned over the years but he picked up years of weapons experience to compensate. The Venom symbiote modifies and enhances its hosts abilities or powers so not only is Drax possibly stronger and faster but his combat training plus Venom's shapeshifting raises his threat level considerably.

In Guardians of the Galaxy #23, Flash Thompson wakes up to find most of the Guardians defeated and unconscious with a Venomized Drax piloting the ship to its mission, returning to the symbiote homeworld Klyntar. On top of being powerful enough to take down all of the Guardians, the Venom-possessed Drax is terrifying, its announcement that they've arrived home coming off as more chilling instead of excited. The symbiote eventually leaves Drax who has little to no awareness of his actions under Venom's influence, soon attacking Flash under the pretenses that he caused the damage instead. Although the symbiote merely used the Guardians of the Galaxy as jumping points just to get it home, Venom proved that Drax, under the control of someone or something else, is not to be underestimated at all.
