Gulliver's Travels & Narnia 3 Coming in 3D

The list of high-profile 3D films continues to grow as The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader as well as Gulliver's Travels are now expected to get the 3D treatment. Initially considered speculation, Coming Soon has confirmed that the two FOX properties will, in fact, undergo a 3D conversion.

Dawn Treader and Travels are both scheduled for December releases, stuffing two more 3D properties into an already bulging 3D holiday release set. Moviegoers will nearly be offered a new 3D film each week throughout November and December.

The over-abundance of 3D films available this holiday season will certainly put the 3D argument into perspective - and answer the fundamental question at the center of the debate - will moviegoers support the format in a significant way or will studios have over-saturated theaters with too many 3D options?

Up until this point, 3D was marketed as an added experience. It didn't appear in too many movies - so that there was rarely more than one available at any given time. The feature undoubtedly helped sell moviegoers on films they might not have initially been interested in as well as encouraged consumers to opt for the 3D version of a film (over the 2D version). It was easier to justify the extra cost of the ticket because seeing a film in 3D was a special treat that didn't come along every week.

However, with so many films getting a 3D make-over, it's likely that consumers will begin to become more choosy about which films they're interested in seeing in 3D and which films they'd rather just see in 2D - further reinforcing the point that not all of these films probably need to be in the over-priced format. Given the cost of conversion and a limited number of 3D capable screens, it's even possible that the a few of these 3D films will not make enough money to have justified the price of conversion - cutting into the overall revenues of the film as a whole.

Hopefully, if nothing else, the amount of competition between the films will force future filmmakers to up the ante - to not simply patch 3D onto to a film just for a quick buck.

That said, the general public certainly has yet to become disillusioned when it comes to 3D films - so we may be in for a long ride.

What do you think of Gulliver's Travels and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader getting the 3D treatment? Will you see all these movies in 3D?

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is scheduled for release on December 10th.

Gulliver's Travels is scheduled for release on December 22nd.
