Schmooey, a legendary Guitar Hero player who’s been considered the best one in the world for years, was exposed for massive cheating in his record-breaking videos. Schmooey was believed to be a master of handling a guitar-shaped controller, but it’s not always the direct purpose of a gaming device that makes someone a legend, as demonstrated by one ingenious gamer.

An inventive and famous player ATwearkingYoshi completed a Halo 3 playthrough on Legendary difficulty using a Guitar Hero controller as their input device of choice. Such an unconventional approach to playing an FPS game required some tweaks in the controls’ layout. It resulted in extremely uncomfortable keybinds, some of which were only accessible while the player was holding an orange button on the guitar. Because of that, ATwearkingYoshi died 252 times during the playthrough.

Schmooey, once considered the best Guitar Hero player on the planet, has been recently exposed for cheating in what previously appeared as highly professional gameplay videos (per a report by Kotaku). Back in December, after Schmooey uploaded another video of him completing an overcomplicated song at incredible speed during a Guitar Hero livestream, eagle-eyed viewers noticed several weird discrepancies including an unexpected Windows Media Player overlay. After being confronted by players regarding their findings, Schmooey admitted that he had been using various techniques to cheat in some of his videos. Unfortunately for the streamer, the community was not satisfied with the confession and instead went back to check every single video by Schmooey. The discovery made by fans was discouraging. Almost every clip among a nearly hundred uploaded included cheating techniques. This eventually led to Schmooey apologizing in a video, after which he went on to delete all the clips and stop any presence on social media. The story of his downfall and details of his cheating methods have been told in a YouTube video by Karl Jobst.

Schmooey’s place will be taken by another skilled player soon. Especially considering that players believe there’s going to be another Guitar Hero entry after the recent acquisition of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft. Xbox is in need of big-name exclusives, which probably implies that Activision’s massive portfolio of forgotten franchises will be utilized to resurrect some of the most exciting titles. Including, as fans expect, Guitar Hero.

Although Schmooey did apologize for deceiving the Guitar Hero community for years, he only decided to do so after being caught red-handed. True to the saying that one either dies a hero or lives long enough to see themselves become a villain, Schmooey's fall from grace underscores the truth that one shouldn’t believe everything they see on the internet. Still, it is always sad to witness a legend die, especially in such a fashion that the whole legacy of a person becomes irrelevant.
