The PlayStation 2 and Wii versions of Guitar Hero: Metallica had the added bonus of a few tracks from Metallica's well-received 2008 album, Death Magnetic - oft-referred to as a return to Metallica's roots. PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 owners were able to download these songs as additional content for Guitar Hero: Metallica.

Guitar Hero: Metallica features almost 50 tracks, roughly 20 of which were songs by other bands, including Queen and Foo Fighters. The songs by other bands featured in the game were said to be heavy personal influences to Metallica, who played a big part in the creation of the game itself - going so far as providing motion capture for their on-screen avatars.

Metallica confirmed their ubiquity as pop culture icons, not just by branching out into video games with Guitar Hero: Metallica, but also with their 2013 concert movie Metallica Through the Never. Whilst Guitar Hero: Metallica was criticized due to its substandard graphics and lack of downloadable content beyond a few songs from Death Magnetic, the game still sits pretty on review aggregate websites like Metacritic, where it has a score of 86/100.
