Warning: contains spoilers for Symbiote Spider-Man: King in Black #4!

In the latest issue of Marvel's King in Black prequel miniseries, the Symbiote Spider-Man has teamed up with an odd collection of heroes to stop the efforts of Knull the Symbiote God, with Guardians of the Galaxy's Collector even helping to stop the void made flesh. Symbiote Spider-Man: King in Black takes place in the days when Peter Parker still wore the black suit he received from Marvel's Secret Wars, and didn't yet know its true nature as the Venom symbiote. The concept of symbiotes hadn't even become a factor at this point in the Marvel timeline. However, Knull's first attempt to infiltrate Earth took place during this time as well, leading to an assembly of heroes the likes of which had never been seen before.

In the series from writer Peter David with art by Greg Land, Spider-Man finds himself joining Rocket Raccoon, Monica Rambeau's Captain Marvel, and none other than Kang the Conqueror to pursue Mister E, a proto-symbiote and servant to Knull. In prior issues, Mister E had stolen the powerful Ebony Blade from the Black Knight, seeking to destroy it due to its potential threat to his lord the King in Black. As such, he took the blade to Knowhere in the far reaches of space to try and have it destroyed by a troll blacksmith, but the heroes were close behind.

Symbiote Spider-Man: King in Black #4 sees the heroes defeating Mister E, as Monica Rambeau uses her powers to fill Mister E with UV light, solidifying him so Spider-Man and Rocket can actually take him out. Unfortunately, Mister E remains a dangerous foe with intel that would be useful to his master. Kang solves this problem by sending him to Taneleer Tivan, also known as the Collector. Trapped in one of the Collector's many containment cells, it seems likely that Mister E is still held within the Collector's collection to this day in the present Marvel timeline.

Thanks to the Collector, Mister E has most likely never been freed, meaning that he never got a second attempt to destroy the Ebony Blade, thereby making the King in Black more vulnerable during his ongoing invasion. Additionally, it's also pretty amusing that it doesn't appear as though Kang the Conqueror and the Collector had any sort of prior agreement. The Collector is just so obsessed with his collection and specimens that he can be depended on to keep Mister E contained in perpetuity. It's a smart move by Kang, playing off the predictability of the Collector's obsession and knowing he'd never release Mister E, even at the risk of making an enemy of his creator.

One of the great things about Marvel's interconnected world is how beings of different scales interact. Spider-Man may be a street-level hero, but his adventures can take him up against world-ending threats like Knull and even Elders of the Universe can show up to save the day (if prompted by time-traveling conquerors.) Kang weaponizes his larger understanding of the universe and its major players, using the Collector as a pawn against Knull in the knowledge that his collection is more secure than any prison. The issue ends with another cosmically significant character - Uatu the Watcher - entering the fray, making it clear that while this story isn't the last time the King in Black would trouble Earth, that doesn't make it any less vital to the saga of his defeat.
