Marvel's popular Guardians of the Galaxy team is getting a brand-new series, and it starts off with a bang as one of their own is involved in a terrible betrayal. Once a C-team of minor heroes, the space-faring superhero squad exploded in popularity thanks to the 2008 revival of the team and the well-received Guardians of the Galaxy films in the MCU. Now, Marvel reveals a 2023 relaunch of one of their most popular superhero teams, with a dark twist before the story has even begun.

The Guardians of the Galaxy have, for the most part, sat out the majority of 2022's slate of crossover events and important milestones in Marvel Comics. Rocket and Groot, arguably the most popular members of the team, appeared in multiple series, especially Mech Strike: Monster Hunters in which Groot transformed into a giant to fight Doctor Doom. Though the series ended last year, Marvel has seen the writing on the wall and decided to relaunch the line, complete with a brand-new storyline and returning characters like Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Nebula and Mantis.

In a press release courtesy of Marvel.com, a new writing team of Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly (from the recent Captain America 2022 run) will be behind the all-new Guardians of the Galaxy series which begins when an event known as Grootfall forces the team to journey into the unknown. "One year ago, the Guardians of the Galaxy were destroyed. Their optimistic future shattered by the betrayal of one of their own." The release specifies the team is attempting to outrun their tragedy of the past. "Can they rediscover their heroism and humanity on the bleakest frontier? Can they forgive the failures of their past? Or will they fade into the dark, eternally unforgiven?"

'Grootfall' Comes To The Guardians of the Galaxy

Guardians of the Galaxy new comic series

It appears the Guardians of the Galaxy have a fractured team in the midst of suffering a full-blown crisis. For Marvel's heroes, this story follows a disturbing pattern: the Fantastic Four seemingly broke up in their new series, Iron Man has lost his fortune and started drinking again, and Spider-Man has lost all his allies after a nebulous event six months from the present day. The Guardians are quite a dysfunctional bunch on a regular day, so one can only imagine what crisis awaits them in their new series - and precisely who has betrayed them.

The new series will be a welcome sight for fans of the team who have waited patiently for new adventures from the space-faring superheroes. New costumes have been revealed for the Guardians, one of their own has betrayed the others, and it appears that the lost time will be explained. Fans of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise will not have to wait for the MCU film's release to see Gamora, Drax, and all the other favorite superheroes on the squad.
