When we catch up with the Guardians of the Galaxy in Avengers: Infinity War, they'll have changed a great deal—and may even teach Earth's Mightiest Heroes how to be a better team. The new Avengers 3 trailer is coming soon, which is sorely needed now that the film is releasing a week earlier. The first teaser and the subsequent TV spots have given us a glimpse of the action in Wakanda, the changes the Avengers have gone through, and Thanos' mission. But outside of a brief group shot, we don't yet know how the Guardians will factor into things.

With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 moving along, we more or less know most of the team will survive Avengers 3 and Avengers 4. But with Gamora and Nebula confronting Thanos, there's still plenty of potential for drama. Meanwhile, some of the other Guardians will be teaming up with Thor and eventually heading to Wakanda and the front lines of the war. But hopefully we'll also see them all together, if nothing else so we can look at how much they've changed.

During Screen Rant's set visit to Avengers: Infinity War, we heard from Anthony and Joe Russo about taking over the cosmic team and seeing how much they've grown since Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. While it's only been a year since the film, it's been four years in-universe and the characters have had plenty of adventures and become closer in the time since.

Anthony Russo: There are some changes-

Joe Russo: Groot has grown.

Anthony Russo: But I think changes are about chemistry and about camaraderie and the fact that they're closer, and they're tighter, and they've been doing it for a while. That's, if there's any change, it's in that when they may or may not intersect with the Avengers in this movie, they have cemented their chemistry as a team-

Joe Russo: The relationships have deepened.

Anthony Russo: And they would stand in contrast with the other teams. Potentially.

While the fact that the team is closer knit isn't really a surprise, it will be interesting to see how the past few years of their lives are alluded to. James Gunn will naturally do most of that work in the sequel, but the writers of Avengers: Infinity War will also help to shape our current understanding of the team.

Speaking of the unity amongst the Guardians, Anthony Russo's comment about them standing in contrast to the Avengers is particularly interesting. Captain America: Civil War broke everyone apart, and it wasn't exactly rosy beforehand. Though everyone will unite to stop Thanos, there's bound to be bad blood still. EW's Avengers: Infinity War coverage noted that both Black Widow and Falcon are wary to trust some of their former opponents, and the Mad Titan is sure to use that discord against Earth's defenders. So while the Guardians started out as a rather dysfunctional bunch, they could be the key to healing the rift between the heroes in Avengers: Infinity War.
