Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Just Added Its First New Member

Pom Klementieff in Oldboy Remake

Update: Matthew McConaughey Turned Down Guardians of the Galaxy 2 Villain Role

Over the last few months Guardians of the Galaxy writer and director James Gunn has openly chatted with fans about the industry and his upcoming projects via live Q&A sessions and Facebook, where he shares quite a few hints about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Through these updates fans have been able to keep up with when Gunn has completed new drafts of the script and with casting - something he revealed is actually already mostly done.

We suspect this is because most of the sequel's cast includes returning characters from the original, but no official announcements have been made about new characters being cast until today. Just as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 begins preparations in Atlanta for a February start date of production, so to is casting underway.

We heard last week rumblings that Gunn was in search of a new female lead for the film which is why we're not surprised to see THR's report today that 29 year-old French-Canadian actress Pom Klementieff has joined the cast of Guardians of the Galaxy 2. Marvel was reportedly in search of an Asian actress for an unspecified role and we have a feeling that Klementieff might be joining the Guardians roster as their one new addition.

Guardians of the Galaxy full team

Gunn previously went on record explaining that his first pitch for the sequel saw two new characters joining the Guardians of the Galaxy roster but one of them was unnecessary for the overall narrative and was dropped. Gunn also told us when promoting the first film that he very much wanted to have "at least" two female characters on the team in sequels so here we are.

Pom Klementieff resides in France and has mostly done French films but did have a key role in the American Oldboy remake which saw her attending Comic-Con panels for the film. Like other top candidates, Klementieff participated in onscreen chemistry tests with the cast, and if our hunch is correct, her martial arts skills for preparing for Oldboy will come in handy.

So, if Klementieff's mystery part is indeed a new member of the core team (Gunn talks about new GOTG characters here) - and it might not be - who do you think she's playing? Could she be the telepathic martial artist, Mantis? An adaptation of Moondragon, Drax's daughter in Marvel Comics? The sequel is a "story about fathers" after all...
