Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has officially begun filming, and even though the main cast has already been confirmed, including Will Poulter as Adam Warlock, director James Gunn has teased the presence of a character that every big actor would like to play – but who could it be? The Guardians of the Galaxy became one of the biggest surprises brought by the Marvel Cinematic Universe and won over the hearts of viewers immediately, allowing them to continue to be an important part of this extensive connected universe.

After a long wait and many obstacles along the way, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has finally begun filming, and it brought the main cast of the previous movies back. This peculiar team of misfits debuted on the MCU in 2014 and returned with a sequel, appropriately titled Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, in 2017 before finally crossing paths with the Avengers in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Now, the Guardians are finally coming back as part of the MCU’s Phase 4 and this third adventure will finally introduce Adam Warlock after being teased in one of the many post-credits scenes in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but he might not be the only new, big character in this adventure.

To celebrate the beginning of filming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, James Gunn shared a photo on Twitter, and fans were quick to point out that Peacemaker star Chukwudi Iwuji has joined the cast. Gunn replied to this confirming that he’s part of the cast and that he gave him “the role most every big name actor in Hollywood wanted” – and here are some ideas of which character it could be.

Silver Surfer

Thanos Marvel Comics Silver Surfer

The Disney/Fox merge opened up new possibilities for the MCU as characters like the X-Men and the Fantastic Four can now join this universe, and that also includes Silver Surfer, a humanoid alien with metallic skin and who can travel through space with the help of his surfboard-like craft. Silver Surfer made his big-screen debut in 2007 in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, where he was played by Doug Jones, and he hasn't been seen again in film ever since. Rumors about a Silver Surfer movie began in 2018, and following the Disney/Fox merge, rumors of it coming to the MCU have been floating around since 2019, so fans are now somewhat expecting this character to officially join the MCU. With a new Fantastic Four movie confirmed to be in development and hopefully arriving as part of the MCU’s Phase 5, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 could pave the way for it by introducing Silver Surfer, thus expanding the cosmic side of the MCU and linking the upcoming Fantastic Four movie with the rest of this universe.

Beta Ray Bill

One character that Marvel fans have been eagerly waiting to see in the MCU and who has been rumored to appear almost every time an actor is cast in an undisclosed role is Beta Ray Bill, a Korbinite who even though has a monstrous appearance, has actually been an ally to various heroes in the Marvel Universe. The MCU has actually left some hints throughout its most recent movies that point at Beta Ray Bill being introduced soon, such as a sculpture of his head being displayed on the facade of the Grandmaster’s (Jeff Goldblum) palace in Thor: Ragnarok, the introduction of Stormbreaker in Avengers: Infinity War, and the appearance of the Korbinites in Avengers: Endgame. Given Beta Ray Bill’s close history with Thor in the comics, it has been heavily theorized that he will be his replacement in Phase 4 and beyond, so it would make sense to introduce him in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Galactus

Another big antagonist rumored to be coming to the MCU at some point is Galactus, a cosmic entity known for consuming planets to sustain his life force. Galactus is also associated with the Fantastic Four, with the Silver Surfer serving as a herald and Galactus being both an antagonist and at times ally to Reed Richards and company. Now, with the MCU now delving more into its cosmic side with the Eternals and the Celestials, it would be easier now to bring Galactus into the mix, and he could even be set up as the MCU’s next big villain, taking over Thanos’ place and becoming an even bigger threat that would require the most powerful superheroes to team up to defeat him.

Nova

The future of the MCU beyond Phase 4 is still a mystery, and there are many projects rumored to be in development as part of Phase 5, among those a Nova movie. Just like Beta Ray Bill, Nova’s presence in the MCU has already been somewhat teased: Guardians of the Galaxy saw the introduction of Rhomann Dey (John C. Reilly), who in the comics is the one who chooses Richard Rider as his replacement at the Nova Corps, and Avengers: Infinity War saw the destruction of Xandar and the Nova Corps by Thanos, thus making him the sole survivor. Due to his links to the MCU’s Guardians of the Galaxy, the third movie could be the one to introduce Nova, allowing viewers (especially those not familiar with his comic book history) to get to know him before delving into his origin story in his (still unconfirmed) solo movie.

Sentry

Another possibility for the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 mysterious characters is Sentry. In the 1940s, a joint American/Canadian government operation employed former Nazi scientists and material from the Canadian program Weapon X to re-create the Super Soldier Serum and magnify its effects thousand times over. As years passed, the project became fragmented into sub-operations with outsourced research and no central administration, and one unnamed professor perfected the formula into the Golden Sentry Serum. Years later, meth addict Robert Reynolds broke into the laboratory and consumed the serum, which granted him the power of a million exploding suns, becoming the superhero Sentry. The character has links in the comics to the Avengers and the Fantastic Four, so he's another option of a character who can be introduced in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 to create a bridge with upcoming characters as are the Fantastic Four.
