Jeff Goldblum’s Grandmaster character may be part of the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy - Mission: Breakout! theme park attraction. As many fans may have noted while watching the credits for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in anticipation for its five post-credits scenes, Goldblum’s Grandmaster – who is set to make his big debut in the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok – appears as a dancing floating head (along with other characters in the film). The character doesn’t speak or have any sort of inclusion in the various post-credits scenes, so up until this point it was easy to write off Goldblum’s appearance as nothing more than a passing gag or subtle advertisement for the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok.
With the Grandmaster character being the Collector’s (who appeared in the first Guardians of the Galaxy) brother in the Marvel comics, it would also make sense that perhaps director James Gunn wanted to add a little more connective tissue to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, thanks to some recent comments by Kevin Feige, Goldblum’s Grandmaster’s inclusion seems to be something more than just a passing reference to other MCU properties.
While speaking to Cinema Blend, Feige revealed that they had some extra footage of Goldblum dancing so they decided to add it to Guardians of the Galaxy 2, but also hinted that it could be a reference to an upcoming crossover theme park attraction between Grandmaster and the rest of the Guardians of the Galaxy. For Feige’s full comments, read below:
“We had footage of just Goldblum dancing and thought it would be fun to put it in there. And as you know from the comics, he's The Collector's brother. Keep an eye out at a particular theme park attraction opening soon, you'll get to see a little crossover... It's just a fun thing.”
Naturally true to his usual vague self, Feige didn’t really offer any concrete answers on what Grandmaster’s credit appearance means, but his comments match up perfectly with the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy - Mission: Breakout! ride that’s set to open at Disneyland later this month. Could Goldblum’s Grandmaster character be showing up at some point during that ride, referencing Feige’s crossover comments? Fans will have to wait for the ride to open for any definitive answers.
While certainly a first step, some fans are probably more excited at the potential on-screen meetup of Benicio del Toro’s the Collector and Goldblum’s Grandmaster. While not a guarantee, some recent speculation suggests that the Collector’s Fortress (which is being built for the Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout! attraction) could be making an appearance in Thor: Ragnarok. Could the two brothers cross paths in the film? Only time will eventually tell.
