Director James Gunn reveals his most favorite scene from the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. The filmmaker's brief exit from directing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 after several of his unsavory tweets were unearthed paved the way for him to score a job at Warner Bros. and DC Films, writing and directing what's deemed a soft reboot/sequel to David Ayer's 2016 Suicide Squad. But eventually, Gunn will return to his MCU roots, finishing the story he started when he debuted the rag-tag of galactic heroes.

Released in 2014, the original Guardians of the Galaxy movie introduced a string of new characters who had very little name recognition outside of loyal comic book readers. Despite that, Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket Raccoon, and Groot quickly became fan-favorites and have become integral parts of the MCU. They returned in 2017 in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 with a new adventure, after which, they joined the fight against Thanos.

Some fans were reminiscing about the Guardians of the Galaxy movie after a behind-the-scene image of Dave Bautista and Sean Gunn filming the scene of Drax consoling Rocket following Groot's death began making the rounds on social media. Gunn chimed in on the conversation and shared what it was like shooting the sequence. He finished by saying that this is his favorite scene from the Guardians movies. Read his full tweet below:

Like Gunn and the rest of the crew, viewers of the Guardians of the Galaxy were also very moved by this moment in the film. What made it more emotional is that Rocket didn't have anyone but Groot and was used to putting a strong facade, not showing any vulnerabilities. Meanwhile, Drax is known to be indifferent to other people's sufferings, so seeing him take the time to sit down with Rocket and share in his pain makes for a memorable scene. No wonder Rocket is adamant about making the time heist work in Avengers: Endgame to bring back his team.

The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has forced movies to be delayed and filming to be shut down, causing a domino effect on franchises like the MCU. Right now, Phase 4 is still waiting to start after an extended hiatus following the end of the Infinity Saga. Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was supposed to launch the franchise's new storytelling chapter, but at this point, the film remains undated and will more likely be released as part of MCU's Phase 5. Despite the significant delay, Gunn says that the script for the threequel hasn't been changed, which means that whatever was his original plan for the cosmic team remains the same. He has been tight-lipped about the matter, but it's been revealed that it would mark the end of the group that originally debuted in Guardians of the Galaxy.
