Silver Surfer's rumored appearance in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special has officially been debunked by director James Gunn. Before audiences get the long-awaited third installment in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, fans will receive an extra treat in the form of a new Marvel Studios Special Presentation. The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special focuses on Drax (Dave Bautista) and Mantis (Pom Klementieff) as they attempt to kidnap Kevin Bacon to cheer up Star-Lord (Chris Pratt). The special is confirmed to include multiple Marvel heroes who have already appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Following the release of the first reactions to The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, one Twitter user suggested that Silver Surfer made a surprise appearance in the post-credits scene. James Gunn quickly responded to the user to say that this suggestion was false. The Twitter account has since admitted that they were attempting to go viral by sharing the fake news, and there is no indication that the account actually saw The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. In any case, Gunn has confirmed that audiences should not expect to see Silver Surfer in the Disney+ special.

When Will Silver Surfer Join The MCU?

Silver Surfer has not been able to be part of the MCU before thanks to 20th Century Fox holding his live-action movie rights for the last few decades. The studio even developed a Silver Surfer solo movie in 2018. That changed once Disney acquired 20th Century, reverting the Fantastic 4 and X-Men rights back to Marvel Studios. There have since been various rumors about when Silver Surfer's MCU debut could appear, including Thor: Love and Thunder and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. While Gunn has now publicly debunked the possibility of Norrin Radd appearing in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, he has not commented on a possible role in the third movie.

There are a few possibilities for where Silver Surfer could appear in future MCU projects. Marvel Studios' Fantastic 4 movie could make sense for an appearance depending on how the film plans to tackle the team's origin and place in the larger franchise. The cosmic side of The Marvels' story might also be able to provide a link to Silver Surfer. Of course, a powerful cosmic hero and the herald of Galactus might also find himself with a massive role in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty or Avengers: Secret Wars.

Silver Surfer's MCU future might still look unclear at the moment, but it should only be a matter of time before he appears. Marvel Studios could make him the star of a Disney+ show or Special Presentation even to give audiences a chance to fully understand his backstory and mission. The introduction of Silver Surfer will mean that Marvel is finally on the verge of fully exploring the cosmos too, so hopefully The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special can help push that side of the MCU forward.
