James Gunn, director of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies reveals people can only learn Groot's language by connecting with him. Guardians of the Galaxy is one of the MCU's most beloved series of films, with many applauding its off-beat, distinct characters. One of these is Groot, a tree-like being voiced by Vin Diesel. His best friend is Rocket Raccoon, who helps translate the character's various "I am Groot"s. In the first Guardians movie, Groot is an adult. However, after sacrificing himself to save the team, he spends Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 as a baby. Groot appears next in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, this time as a teenager.

At this point, it isn't known for sure when Groot will next appear in the MCU. He'll be back for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, though that film doesn't yet have a release date. It's also possible Groot will show up with some of the other Guardians in Thor: Love and Thunder, which is due out in 2022. Diesel made fans believe this was possible after sharing a conversation he had with Taika Waititi, that film's director. According to Diesel, the two discussed some characters from Guardians appearing in the next Thor movie. Given the nature of the discussion, it seems likely Groot would be one of those characters. As Thor joined the Guardians on their ship at the end of Avengers: Endgame, their involvement in Thor: Love and Thunder makes sense.

During the ongoing coronavirus lockdown, Gunn has participated in watch parties for his films, often answering questions from fans. Earlier this week, one fan asked about Star-Lord's universal translator and why it doesn't work on Groot's language. Gunn first explained the translator "doesn't have all languages in it," before adding "people don't learn Groot through knowing the language - they learn it through connecting with Groot." Gunn is far from the only creator to discuss his work with fans while stuck at home: Waititi led a watch party for Thor: Ragnarok recently, revealing details from both that film and Thor: Love and Thunder. He also shared why certain songs were cut, while teasing that some could appear in a future movie of his.
