James Gunn unveils a terrifying image of Guardians of the Galaxy's unused Gamora masks, and fans will never look at her the same way again. These days, the Guardians of the Galaxy are among the most popular MCU characters in the world. Back in 2014, however, most audiences knew nothing about the ragtag group of intergalactic warriors. A team with a talking tree and a racoon would always be a hard sell, but in Gunn's capable hands, Guardians of the Galaxy became a massive hit. To this day, many still consider it to be among the best Marvel films.

The Guardians last appeared in 2019's Avengers: Endgame, which saw much of the team get revived from the dead in epic fashion. However, the situation for Gamora (Zoe Saldana) is still rather tricky. Gamora died at the hands of her adoptive father Thanos (Josh Brolin) in Avengers: Infinity War, and the nature of her death meant she couldn't be revived so easily. However, an alternate version of Gamora from 2014 made her way to the present day, and she's currently somewhere unknown in the universe.

Gunn took a trip down memory lane recently by sharing an old behind the scenes picture from the Guardians of the Galaxy set. The image shows Saldana, in full Gamora makeup, alongside two others wearing masks for the character. The two Gamora masks are scarily similar to Saldana's actual appearance, making for an uncanny trio. Check out the picture down below.

Unnerving looks aside, it's truly impressive how the face masks actually come close to the real thing. As Gunn said, they were never used, and it's safe to say Saldana's makeup came out better than a mask would've looked. Still, it's cool to see what could have been, especially since a great deal of work likely went into these. Guardians of the Galaxy had a lot of impressive prosthetics and bits of makeup, and this is just another example of that excellence.

The Guardians will next be seen in Thor: Love and Thunder, though Gamora might not be included within their ranks. Many believe the forthcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will focus on the team searching for Gamora, but as of now, Gunn hasn't revealed many plot details. It seems likely that some future project will return to the matter of the missing Gamora, though, since that was one of the lingering plot threads from Endgame. The character has come a long way since Guardians of the Galaxy, and based on the above image, her appearance has done the same.
