Zoe Saldaña reveals that she's interested in making an MCU Gamora prequel movie. The version of the Guardians of the Galaxy character that fans came to know and love was sacrificed by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War, but Saldaña returned to the MCU as her past self in Avengers: Endgame. After time-traveling to the present and switching sides to take down Thanos, she goes off on her own, and Peter Quill and the other Guardians set out to find her.

While her co-stars are slated to appear in the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder, Gamora is not currently included on the cast list, so fans are anticipating seeing Saldaña reprise her role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Series director James Gunn has teased the film as the end of this superhero team, and Saldaña has spoken about her return to the character being a bittersweet experience. Seth Green, who voices the cameo character Howard the Duck, has said the film is set to be centered around the story of Gamora and Nebula, teasing her character's importance to the narrative.

Now, Saldaña reveals that, of all the characters she's played in her career, the one she's most interested in exploring the past of is Gamora. In an interview for Jake's Takes, she notes that the short depiction of her character's "adoption" by Thanos made her eager to explore that history in greater detail. The virtual extinction of her species has left Gamora carrying a tremendous weight, Saldaña says, and unpacking that further would be an exciting opportunity. Check out her full quote below:

I would say Gamora. [...] I feel like that taster [of Gamora's childhood in Avengers: Infinity War] made me incredibly curious to know what that planet was like, what her species was like, because they were completely wiped out of existence. And because she carries such a big weight on herself, and to get know why and where that comes from was really great.

Gamora Child Infinity War

Based on what is known so far about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Saldaña could be getting her wish, as a story focused on a pre-Guardians Gamora would certainly involve unpacking her unprocessed trauma. Even though the movie takes place in a post-Endgame universe, many have theorized it will make heavy use of flashback, also exploring the origins of characters like Rocket Racoon. However, Saldaña's comments could hint that Gunn's film doesn't revisit the character's childhood.

As for the possibility of a Gamora prequel movie after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Phase 4 of the MCU is all but fully mapped out, and fans shouldn't expect this idea to come to fruition anytime soon. It is worth noting that the MCU has been willing to take more storytelling risks following the conclusion of Phase 3, and if there's enough demand for it, a Gamora solo-project could be right for Disney+. Then again, considering Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is going to partly revolve around Gamora, it's not beyond the realm of possibility that Saldaña is hinting at something that is already in the pipeline.
