Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy uses its '80s-inspired soundtrack to create a unique gameplay mechanic for players to enjoy. Developer Eidos Montreal has steadily been revealing elements of the new GotG game leading up to its October release, including looks at the original story and a recent introduction to adversary Lady Hellbender. Now the developer has shown more about how music will play a role in the upcoming game.

The Guardians have become synonymous with '80s rock/pop music ever since the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie was released in 2011. Star-Lord never listened to music in the Marvel comics up to that point, but James Gunn's decision to equip Peter Quill with a Walkman and have musical cues throughout the movies became a big hit with Marvel fans. With the Guardians of the Galaxy game, Eidos Montreal looks poised to continue the Guardians' penchant for music-filled adventures.

In a new developer insight video, Eidos Montreal revealed more about how the Guardians of the Galaxy's original story will incorporate music throughout the game. Senior Audio Director Steve Szczpkowski explained that the game's soundtrack "is infused into the DNA of the game, and our use of it goes far beyond usual expectations." Szczpkpwski goes on to say that all of the musical elements were "carefully woven into the lore to enhance the story of this rock and roll band of misfits."

How Guardians of the Galaxy's Huddle Feature Uses Music

The Huddle Guardians of the Galaxy Soundtrack Is A Gameplay Mechanic

In addition to an original orchestral score written by BAFTA-nominated composer Richard Jaques, the Guardians of the Galaxy game will include a mix of licensed pop and rock hits from the 1980s at certain points throughout the game. Some of the artists included in the game are KISS, Rick Astley, Iron Maiden, and New Kids on the Block, with more still to be revealed when Guardians of the Galaxy releases. Some of these songs will be utilized in the gameplay itself in what is known as the Huddle feature.

The Huddle feature sees Guardians of the Galaxy implement the licensed music into combat scenarios using Star-Lord's Cassette Player. All players have to do is hit play on the device, which will cue a specific '80s song that inspires the Guardians team and helps motivate them while fighting. Szczpkowski explains that some of the songs that Eidos Montreal has selected might seem out of place in these moments, but "the juxtaposition brings an additional element of fun to the combat sequences."

This isn't the first mention of the Huddle feature from Eidos Montreal, as the E3 reveal trailer for GotG showed Star-Lord using the Cassette Player to trigger "Bad Reputation" by Joan Jett & the Blackhearts during a fight with alien creatures. It seems to be a unique mechanic that takes the '80s musical cues that fans are used to seeing with the Guardians and implementing them into combat naturally. Eidos Montreal seems to be playing heavily into what makes the dysfunctional group popular with Marvel fans, and here's to hoping that Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy will deliver an enjoyable experience.
