A new cinematic trailer for the Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy game has been released, which sees heroes Peter Quill and Drax as they meet Lady Hellbender for the first time, in addition to a strange bubble monster. It's a creature that seems to be able to easily overpower those that stand in its way, but just what is it?

This latest cinematic trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy is laced with humor and playful back-and-forths between characters. However, even with its immediately engaging dialogue, there is another reason that this specific Guardians of the Galaxy clip has been met with such applause - the presence of Lady Hellbender, leader of the Hellraisers, queen of Seknarf Nine and renowned monster collector.

Playing off Lady Hellbender’s penchant for beasts, this Guardians of the Galaxy trailer revolves around Peter Quill and Drax attempting to con Lady Hellbender into purchasing Groot, as the guardians endeavor to get themselves out of debt. Before they can present their own “wares” to Lady Hellbender, however, another tradesman takes the floor. This seller claims to have captured a Tara-tara, and gestures to a rather unassuming creature covered with bubble like eyes all over its body, that is trapped inside an orb. Unconvinced by the tradesman’s claims, Lady Hellbender goads the seller into proving the monster’s authenticity by getting them to release the alleged Tara-tara from its encasement. When they do this, however, the once small and modest creature soon starts to morph into a gigantic beast that ultimately destroys its seller. This metamorphosis removes all doubt about the creature.

Guardians Of The Galaxy: Things Aren’t Always What They Seem

Guardians of the Galaxy Lady Hellbender and a Tara-tara

Darryl Purdy, the Cinematics and Animation Director on Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, has shared more information on what exactly a Tara-tara is. Writing for Square Enix’s website, Purdy explains that a Tara-tara is a “powerful shape shifter.” Its apparently meek form at the start of the trailer actually hides the true extent of the Tara-tara’s potential. Purdy revealed that the team wanted to “play against expectations” in this particular Guardians of the Galaxy trailer, and the Tara-tara was a great way to introduce this idea at the very start of the cinematic. Purdy said that “…Star-Lord assumes their monster is superior to the scared meek little creature ahead of them. However, that meek little monster turns out to be a Tara-tara.”

This trick was also used to show off a bit more of Lady Hellbender's character in Guardians of the Galaxy. Much like with the Tara-tara, Purdy said that the team wanted to “create an overall feeling that things are not always as they seem” with Lady Hellbender’s introduction. Therefore, rather than showing her defeating the rampaging Tara-tara with strength, the team instead demonstrated the powerful ruler using tenderness and compassion to appease the beast. Once calmed, the Tara-tara returns to its smaller - and much more docile - form.

This scene alone shows the promise of the unexpected for the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy game. The easy humor, twists, and animations seem to have left an impression on many fans. Hopefully the trailer's attention to detail and general quality extend to the final product. If this trailer is anything to go by, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy should have plenty of interesting characterizations when it utimately releases this fall.
