Part of the fun in the buildup to Avengers: Infinity War was trying to figure out where all the Infinity Stones Thanos was looking for could be hiding. While some stones, like the Power Stone, were revealed early on in movies like Guardians of the Galaxy, others like the Space Stone or Mind Stone were hidden in other objects, like the Tesseract Cube or Loki’s scepter.

However, these hiding spaces were nothing compared to some of the places Infinity Stone keepers chose to hide their stones (or “Infinity Gems”) in the comics. The gems tended to pass through many different protectors in the early days, and wound up in some very gross places that made many fans hope Thanos decided to wash the Infinity Gems thoroughly before he put them in his gauntlet…

Shortly after the original Infinity Gantlet saga, for instance, the gauntlet and all of the Infinity Gems were passed to Adam Warlock, a powerful being who used his divine might to undo many of Thanos’ evil deeds. When Warlock was judged unfit to be an almighty being by the Living Tribunal, however, he was ordered to divide the gems up and give them to different protectors. Adam chose these protectors from a motley group of alien misfits – including some heroes who later joined the Guardians of the Galaxy. One such champion was Drax the Destroyer, although he looked and acted very differently from the version many are familiar with. At the time, Drax was portrayed as a massive, green monster with a Hulk-like physique. He also suffered from brain damage, leaving him simple and childlike, although ultimately good-hearted.

Deciding that Drax was best suited to safeguard the Power Gem, Adam Warlock gave him the gem which increased his already considerable power to infinite levels. As Infinity Gem bearers typically wore their gems on their foreheads, Adam placed the Power Gem on Drax’s head – but Drax stupidly mistook the Power Gem for a jellybean… and promptly swallowed it.

That’s right – Drax the Destroyer ate an Infinity Gem. Although his teammate Gamora was horrified and tried to point out a very obvious way the Power Gem could easily leave Drax in the near future, Adam Warlock took this in stride and stated the Power Gem was indestructible, indigestible, and capable of remaining in Drax’s unique stomach indefinitely. His words proved accurate (although it’s very possible that some of Drax’s teammates got very nervous every time he flushed the toilet).

Later, however, Warlock decided he needed to rebuild the Infinity Gauntlet and asked his champions to return their gems. Although most of the team could easily remove their Infinity Gems, Drax’s Infinity Gem seemed somewhat… out of reach. Fortunately, Gamora found a way around this by kicking Drax in the stomach with surgical precision. Drax immediately coughed up his Power Gem and spat it out directly into Warlock’s waiting hand.

Considering how surprisingly easily Gamora was able to get Drax to release his hold on the Power Gem with one well-placed kick, it’s possible Drax’s stomach wasn’t the best place to keep an Infinity Gem. Then again, it’s possible anyone who knew where the gem had been wouldn't want to use it.
