The Guardians of the Galaxy are getting a new look in the comics, with their retro-inspired costumes drawing inspiration from a familiar source—the Avengers.

The Guardians have been seeing some big changes lately. After all, space isn’t what it once was. Hulking is now emperor of most of space, with his new husband Wiccan at his side. With his ascension to the throne, the long war between the Skrulls and the Kree is at an end. The end, however, doesn’t mean that space is problem-free. With a new invading army of scary, violent aliens called the Progenitors and the lurking threat of Doctor Doom, the Guardians are called on to help save the day.

In a recent interview with Gamesradar, writer Al Ewing excitedly shared about the upcoming changes for the Guardians of the Galaxy and their ever-growing crew. Ewing took the time to praise artist Juan Frigeri’s recent covers, and shared his joy at seeing the Guardians’ new matching costumes. Pulling inspiration from past comic villains and heroes, Ewing pushed for the Guardians' new superhero looks. Ewing was quoted as saying that he loved the Avengers’ more retro uniforms. "Remember when the Avengers did that in the '90s? They had these leather jackets with the 'A' on them. I always thought that was cool!”

Marvel Cosmic Guardians of the Galaxy Relaunch

Ewing made sure to tease more than just the costumes, discussing the appearance of Doctor Doom and dropping hints about a new S.W.O.R.D. comic that will include some matching gear as well. What exactly this new comic entails in terms of story remains to be seen—comic readers will just have to wait to read it for themselves. However, readers can be assured that there will be some great costume design. "I've been trying to make it happen with one team or other for ages, and now it's happening in two books at once. Jackets!"

Once a ragged band of weirdos and misfits, the team is quickly shaping up to be something much more. The matching uniforms with their bright, primary colors that Ewing stated were “to point up the superheroic tone of this new direction” hint at a more organized and legitimate Guardians team. Though Ewing noted that Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord, may stay in his own gear a bit longer before changing into any of the new duds. No longer considered outlaws, the Guardians of the Galaxy are being given the opportunity to show off their skills as a true superhero team à la Earth’s own Avengers and the costumes advertise that loud and clear.
