James Gunn has revealed that the Marvel Cinematic Universe hero he wants to see join the Guardians of the Galaxy is Ant-Man. Paul Rudd's comedic hero debuted in his 2015 solo film and joined the Avenging ranks last year's Captain America: Civil War, with Scott Lang set to return in next year's Ant-Man and the Wasp.

The Guardians of the Galaxy sub-franchise is much further afield, being the MCU's entry point into the unchartered cosmic side of the universe. While the premise seemed to be risky at first, Gunn was able to successfully pull it off, making Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket and Groot superhero icons. The director is currently working on Guardians' third installment, with the treatment reportedly already done. And we wonder if he was able to squeeze in a part for Scott Lang in the threequel.

In a recent Q&A session that Gunn hosted on his Facebook page, the filmmaker was asked who among the MCU superheroes he would like to bring into the Guardians series the most. The director responded with Ant-Man, although his reasoning was less about the interesting narrative possibilities as it was the fact he simply likes Rudd.

Right now, it is safe to assume that in the existing Marvel canon both Lang and the Guardians do not know that each other exist. The galactic heroes thus far have been isolated doing their own thing outside of Earth. Meanwhile, the last time we saw Scott he was locked up underwater prison the Raft with the rest of Captain America's team before the super soldier broke them out by the end of Civil War. They will surely eventually cross paths, although not as soon as some may expect - Ant-Man is set to sit out Avengers: Infinity War and only join the fight against Thanos in 2019's Avengers 4.

It's fair to say that Ant-Man has proven to be very popular with all involved in the Marvel enterprise. Just recently, Tom Holland revealed while promotin g Spider-Man: Homecoming that he wants his web-slinging character to team up with Rudd's shrinking one. Of course, unlike the Guardians, Peter already had initial contact with Scott as both of them partook in the iconic airport battle scene in Cap 3 (albeit being on opposite teams).

While the banter between Scott Lang and Rocket or maybe even Drax is a humorous notion to think of, it's quite unlikely that Ant-Man will suddenly be catapulted in the cosmic realms to join the Guardians of the Galaxy proper - after all, Gunn's answer was entirely hypothetical. But with the already planned Vol. 3 set to lay the groundwork for the MCU going forward, the sky is far from the limit in the future.
