Spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy #13 ahead!

Under the direction of writer Al Ewing, the Guardians of the Galaxy have embarked on a new direction, moving from galactic outlaws to galactic law enforcement officers; with this new mandate has come an expansion to the team’s roster, mixing in regular players from Marvel’s cosmic scene with some surprising new faces—including Doctor Doom! Ewing is not done building up the team, however, and promises even more members are on the way.

At the end of Guardians of the Galaxy #12, the team is approached by representatives of the Galactic Council, one of which is the Super Skrull. He informs them the galaxy is in turmoil both politically and economically, and the Council does not have the resources to start another Nova Corps, thus the Guardians are deputized as agents of the Council. They are then given new uniforms and a new headquarters, and in issue 13 readers see the team has several new members, including the aforementioned Super Skrull and Doctor Doom, as well as Wiccan and Hulkling, the leaders of the Kree-Skrull Alliance; and now, the Guardians are set to expand even further.

Speaking in an interview with GamesRadar, Ewing expressed a desire to add more characters, calling the currently 17-member team a “starting point.” Ewing has injected the Guardians of the Galaxy with a dose of fresh blood, bringing in cosmic scene stalwarts such as the Super Skrull and Hulkling, and in the interview he stated he would like to continue this trend of adding new faces.

The new members Ewing has brought onto the team have changed the dynamic of the Guardians of the Galaxy in a fresh and exciting way. The team is not only adjusting to their new status as agents of the Galactic Council, but also all of the new members. Hulkling and Wiccan’s inclusion makes sense, as they are leaders of an empire; others, like Doctor Doom, most certainly will shake the team up in unexpected ways. The question is: who could potentially join the Guardians next? And how long will the new members stick around? Doom obviously has an agenda and a reason for joining, but does anyone else?

Al Ewing, along with artist Juan Frigeri, has laid out a bold new direction for the Guardians of the Galaxy, giving them a new mission as well as surprising new members, and more are to come in the months ahead. Fans can see the current team in action in Guardians of the Galaxy #13, on sale now in print and digital; Guardians of the Galaxy #14, will be available May 12.
