James Gunn responds to questions about if he'll direct Guardians of the Galaxy 4 by saying never say never, even though he views Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 as the end. Marvel Studios gave Gunn plenty of freedom to bring the Guardians of the Galaxy to the screen in 2014. Their appearance in the first movie turned the obscure comics characters into major parts of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The two Guardians of the Galaxy movies released so far have combined to make over $1.6 billion and expand the cosmic side of the MCU.

Fans have been waiting for several years to see the next Guardians of the Galaxy film, and that wait will be a bit longer. Marvel Studios finally gave Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 an official May 2023 release date recently. Even though fans are still years away from continuing the story, there are already some thinking about what happens after. Gunn has long-maintained that the movie is designed to be the end of the current iteration of the Guardians team and wrap up the trilogy story he began in 2014. And even after being fired and rehired to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Gunn is already getting questions about being involved in a potential fourth movie.

Gunn is known for being incredibly active on social media and engaging with fans about all of his work. This recently included a fan asking Gunn if he'd consider directing Guardians of the Galaxy 4. There are no official plans for a fourth Guardians of the Galaxy movie at the moment, and Gunn gave a simple "never say never" response to the inquiry. However, he once again reiterated that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is the end of the story he originally mapped out.

If Marvel Studios eventually decides to make Guardians of the Galaxy 4, it will be fascinating to see if James Gunn directs. He is one of the busiest directors in Hollywood at the moment and has become involved in the DC Extended Universe too with The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker. He'll have plenty of options for what to do next after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Gunn currently seems content with ending his time directing the franchise after three films too. This doesn't mean the end of the Guardians, though, as the characters could continue to be part of the MCU and even get a fourth movie if there is enough interest.

Even if Marvel Studios decides to make Guardians of the Galaxy 4 without James Gunn directing, he could still serve as a producer on the movie. He oversaw the use of the Guardians in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, and he's doing the same with Thor: Love and Thunder. The roster of Guardians of the Galaxy 4 will likely look quite different, but Gunn could still be consulted about the roles for any original members. Then again, he could take this opportunity to walk away from the MCU or discover a story for Guardians of the Galaxy 4 that he can't pass up. Since we're still two years away from the next installment of the franchise, Marvel and Gunn can take their time figuring out what to do next and whether or not Gunn will continue to be involved.
