Zoe Saldana, who plays Gamora in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, opened up about her bittersweet feelings reprising the role in Guardians Of The Galaxy 3. Since her MCU introduction in Guardians of the Galaxy, Gamora has consistently appeared in the MCU among the other Guardians to confront cosmic-level threats. As the daughter of Thanos (Josh Brolin), Gamora has a reputation for her fierceness as a warrior. However, she developed a softer side during her time traveling the galaxy with Peter Quill/Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Drax (Dave Bautista), Rocket Racoon (Bradley Cooper), and Groot (Vin Diesel).

Although Gamora was last seen in the climactic final battle of Avengers: Endgame, the version seen in that film was not the character introduced to audiences in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie. Gamora from the known MCU perished during the events of Avengers: Infinity War at the hands of her father, Thanos, so the version of Gamora now in the MCU is one from a different timeline. The current Guardians team is set to appear in the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder. But, having come from a different timeline, Gamora is unfamiliar with that team—aside from her sister, Nebula (Karen Gillan)—and is no longer traveling with them.

In an interview with Empire Magazine via Slashfilm, Saldana opened up about coming back to play Gamora in Guardians Of The Galaxy 3. While Gamora's fate is still unclear, Saldana explains how emotional returning for the role is and how the film's team has dealt with the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. See what Saldana said below:

“It’s bittersweet; after all those years of complaining about that green make-up, I find myself already nostalgic about it. There’s a lot of melancholy here, but also pride that we’ve achieved something great. James Gunn has written a beautiful story, that’s making us emotional even as we shoot it. Omicron plays a doozy on us every other day, but we’re getting by and we’re happy.”

Saldana goes on to reference Gamora's complicated story in the MCU. With her death and her subsequent return, the character has as much to understand as audiences do. Meanwhile, Gamora's love interest from Guardians Of The Galaxy and Guardians Of The Galaxy 2, Pratt's Peter Quill/Star-Lord, was last seen in Avengers: Endgame scouring the galaxy for Gamora. The two shared a brief reunion in Endgame, but Quill's eagerness to see Gamora again was not returned since the current version of Gamora is not from Quill's timeline.

While Saldana's return as Gamora in Guardians Of The Galaxy 3 is exciting, there are also reasons to be nervous for some of the favorite Guardians characters. The previous Guardians films had no qualms about sacrificing main characters, namely Vin Diesel's Groot in the first—although Groot later returned as a child—and Yondu (Michael Rooker) in the second. With Gamora and many of her previous Guardians teammates having been around in the MCU for quite some time now, any of them could make the sacrifice play for their friends in the franchise's third film. With just about a year and a half before the film's release, audiences won't have to wait too long to find out what's next for Gamora when Guardians Of The Galaxy 3 releases in theaters on May 5, 2023.
