William Shatner wants to be in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The actor, now 90 years-old, is to this day most famous for his portrayal of Captain Kirk on the original Star Trek TV series. While Shatner is still working as an actor, promoting his film Senior Moment with Jean Smart and Christopher Lloyd, the Canadian hasn't physically played Kirk since 1994 and says he has no interest in reprising his Star Trek role. However, Shatner will still voice Kirk for video games.

Guardians 3 still hasn't begun filming, at the moment aiming for a late fall start, though director James Gunn has claimed to have at least completed the soundtrack. The film was famously in turmoil after Gunn was fired for unearthed jokes about assaulting children, but following a hire at DC to do The Suicide Squad, Gunn was reinstated at Marvel and the film was back on track. After rumors that Luke Skywalker actor Mark Hamill would be in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the Kirk actor now putting his name in the race showcases just how much fans want their sci-fi galaxies to collide.

In an interview with Express, Shatner revealed he is more than willing to play a role in the third Guardians of the Galaxy film. While discussing Senior Moment, Shatner teased the possibility of rejoining the Starship Enterprise again as long as it was "it was something worthy," before going on to say he'd love for Quentin Tarantino to direct Star Trek. When asked about any interest in joining Star-Lord and Gamora in the stars, Shatner exclaimed, "Yeah! I’ve guarded the galaxy many times."

Given the current timeline, the request to at least cameo would still be an actual possibility. Not much is known about the plot of the film at the moment other than that Guardians 3 may be a tearjerker. With that, there may even still be a larger role Shatner could play. Father storylines, a major theme in the Guardians films, have already been covered for Star-Lord (Ego, played by Kurt Russell) and Gamora and Nebula (Thanos, adoptively, played by Josh Brolin), but Rocket Raccoon, Drax, Mantis, and Groot could also have their own arcs on the topic still, with Shatner playing the paternal role.

After The Avengers broke new ground in terms of different universes combining on one screen, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which may be James Gunn's Marvel swan song, could take it a step further. Having the James T. Kirk actor appear in the film could be the ultimate fan moment for those who love Gunn's films and the long-running sci-fi franchise that shot Shatner to fame. With Gunn still working on the film, it's more than possible that Shatner coulda appear in some capacity, making dreams come true for some space-faring fans out there clamoring to see the Kirk actor take on another galaxy.
