Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will use The Mandalorian’s groundbreaking VFX technology for select scenes, according to director James Gunn. The highly anticipated third entry in one of the MCU’s most lauded series has still not received a proper release date from Disney, but early work seems to be underway for the next adventure of Starlord, Gamora and the rest of crew. As one of the biggest ongoing Marvel Studios brands, it makes sense that Guardians would incorporate Disney’s latest cutting-edge tech.

The Mandalorian's special effects broke major ground for TV production through a technique using giant LED screens to generate the show’s various alien worlds, rather than relying strictly on set construction and green screens. In many cases, planets and backgrounds would be digitally created before filming and would be projected on massive background screens, visible to the actors and crew while production occurred. The series has received significant acclaim for its theater-caliber effects, a good deal of which is due to this unique VFX approach.

Since Disney has already had so much success with the technique, it makes sense they would want to incorporate it into more of their major projects going forward. Responding to a recent tweet from a fan asking if Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 would use The Mandalorian’s LED background VFX, director James Gunn confirmed that it would. “Yes, some,” Gunn said, “where it fits.” The first two Guardians of the Galaxy films have been widely praised, both for their aesthetic and their phenomenal cast. It sounds like the next film will be no different.

Though fans have a while to wait before Vol. 3 releases, they’ll get at least some new material from the Guardians characters in 2022’s Thor: Love & Thunder. The disparate franchises within the MCU have overlapped more and more over time, and Phase 4 is embracing that destratification even more than before. The cast of heroes and villains who’ve appeared in the MCU over the years has expanded exponentially, with any given project wielding the potential to bring back a surprise face or two.

The shared technology between Guardians of the Galaxy and The Mandalorian is also emblematic of a larger crossover within Disney itself, as the creative teams behind Star Wars, Marvel and the company’s other brands continue to collaborate and innovate. The technical quality and polish of shows like The Mandalorian and WandaVision have helped Disney+ quickly earn a major spot in the streaming marketplace. It sounds like MCU fans can look forward to more of that high quality in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
