James Gunn confirmed his MCU threequel will be titled Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Since entering the MCU with Guardians of the Galaxy, Gunn has made himself a staple of the universe. He's not only directed the first two installments of the space opera franchise, but was an executive producer on Avengers: Infinity War. He isn't just writing and directing the closing chapter of his trilogy either, as he's working with Kevin Feige to craft the next 10 years of Marvel's cosmic adventures.

As long as Gunn is involved with the Guardians though, his usual comedic sense, visual style, and musical choices will be included. The latter has helped shaped the Guardians of the Galaxy as much as anything, with the Awesome Mixes becoming insanely popular. They were even the inspiration for the sequel's title and that trend will continue.

Following in the footsteps of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Gunn has confirmed what the next film will be titled. Despite the suggestion from many that it should be Guardians of the Galaxy.mp3 to reflect Star-Lord upgrading from his Walkman to a Zune, the next movie will be titled Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Knowing for sure that Gunn isn't looking to drastically alter the title isn't surprising. The volumes are a fun and unique way to keep the Guardians on brand. This doesn't just apply to the sequels either, as Gunn has said before that internally they refer to the first movie as Vol. 1. Even though this title was expected from the get go, as the movie moves further through development, it's reassuring to know that the plan hasn't changed during that process.

Even though the title is being doubled-down on, nothing official has yet to come out on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The film doesn't have an official release date, but Gunn has repeatedly said a 2020 release is in mind. Thanks to production kicking off early in 2019, it should have no trouble being ready for release by early 2020. Marvel just so happens to have previously laid claim to May 1, 2020 on the release calendar for an "Untitled Marvel Movie."

Since Marvel Studios plans to hold back on Phase 4 announcements until after Avengers 4, fans may have to wait a bit longer than normal to get some official updates on Vol. 3. However, that is likely unavoidable for some of the earlier Phase 4 movies. For instance, casting on Vol. 3 could start to be announced at the end of this year. Either way, this is hopefully a sign that more concrete news on what adventure the Guardians embark on next is on the way.
