Writer/director James Gunn confirms that Chris Pratt's Star-Lord will not have Celestial powers in the in-production Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Pratt returns for the Marvel Cinematic Universe threequel alongside teammates Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff and Sean Gunn. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will also introduce Will Poulter to the MCU as Adam Warlock after teasing his arrival in one of the post-credits scenes for the 2017 sequel.

Development on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has been infamously rocky, with Gunn signing on to return in early 2017 only to be dismissed by Disney following the resurfacing of controversial tweets by conservative publications following his criticisms of former President Donald Trump. Gunn would swiftly be hired by Warner Bros. for the DC Extended Universe film The Suicide Squad, with Disney and Marvel Studios reversing their decision shortly thereafter but allowing the filmmaker to finish work on the villain team-up and its spin-off series Peacemaker. Production is finally underway on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but Gunn is staying true to form in offering definitive answers to some elements of his projects.

As filming gets underway, one fan took to Twitter to express their hope that Gunn will further explore Star-Lord's Celestial powers in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The filmmaker would respond, however, by shutting down this possibility, stating Pratt's hero has lost interest in them. See Gunn's response below:

It may not come as much of a surprise to learn that Pratt's Star-Lord has effectively moved on from trying to hone in on his Celestial powers going into Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. As seen in the finale of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, his powers seemingly faded after killing his father, Ego, and his subsequent appearances in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame did away almost entirely with addressing his lineage. While Gunn stating Star-Lord has given his Celestial powers up, the incoming threat of Adam Warlock in the long-awaited threequel could still very well see the team leader try to bring them back.

Even if Star-Lord does continue to move on from his parentage in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, it certainly doesn't mean the end of the Celestials in the MCU. The mammoth alien race recently made their biggest splash yet in the franchise with Chloé Zhao's Eternals, where they were revealed to have created the titular immortal group with the purpose to protect humanity from the Deviants and who continued to be a key element in the plot after vanishing for thousands of years. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to hit theaters on May 5, 2023.
